Dr Kottas’ Cough and Bronchial Tea is a medicinal tea containing the active ingredients ribwort plantain, thyme and marshmallow root. Marshmallow and ribwort plantain contain mucilage, which has a soothing effect on irritation. Thyme is rich in essential oil, which loosens stubborn phlegm and thus makes it easier to cough up.
Dr Kottas’ Cough and Bronchial Tea is a traditional herbal medicinal product for the relief of coughs and mucus build-up associated with colds.

Ribwort plantain (Folium Plantaginis)
- Ribwort plantain is a perennial herbaceous plant growing up to 50 cm tall. It is found throughout the world’s temperate zones. The narrow-lanceolate, sparsely hairy leaves are arranged in a rosette at the base of the plant. The flowering period is from May to September. The leaves, harvested during the flowering period, are of medicinal importance.
- Effect: Its high mucilage content, silicic acid and tonifying bitter compounds make ribwort plantain an excellent cough remedy. It provides relief from catarrh of the upper respiratory tract and has a soothing effect on the mucous membranes of the mouth and throat. When used externally, ribwort plantain leaves are also suitable for treating inflammatory skin conditions.
Thyme (Herba Thymi)
- Thyme is a small subshrub that grows to a height of 10 to 40 cm. It is native to the rocky heaths and evergreen scrublands of the Mediterranean region. This Lamiaceae plant, with its purple to pink flowers, is harvested from May to July. The whole plant has an aromatic scent.
- Effect: The main active ingredient is the essential oil containing thymol, which has antispasmodic and disinfectant properties. Thyme has an antispasmodic effect on the bronchi and helps to loosen and expel phlegm. It alleviates symptoms in cases of acute and chronic bronchitis and whooping cough, as well as catarrh of the upper respiratory tract.
Marshmallow (Radix Althaeae, Folium Althaeae)
- This perennial, soft-haired plant, which grows up to 1.5 m tall, is widespread throughout Europe and Western Asia. The flowers are pale pink to white. The leaves and roots, harvested shortly before flowering, are used medicinally.
- Effect: To soothe irritation caused by inflammation of the mucous membranes in the mouth and throat, as well as in the gastrointestinal tract, and to alleviate the urge to cough associated with bronchial catarrh.
Aniseed (Fructus Anisi)
- Anise is an annual plant growing up to 50 cm tall, belonging to the umbellifer family, and is native to the eastern Mediterranean region. The plant, which flowers with white blossoms from July to August, has a sweetish taste and a characteristic scent. The dried fruits, which contain 2–3 per cent essential oil (mainly anethole), are used medicinally.
- Action: To promote the loosening of mucus in cases of respiratory catarrh, flatulence and cramp-like symptoms in the gastrointestinal tract (particularly in infants and young children). Aniseed facilitates the coughing up of phlegm, has a mild antispasmodic effect and stimulates digestion.

Directions for use
- Adults and adolescents aged 12 and over: 1 cup of tea 3–4 times a day
- Children aged 2–12 years: 1 cup of tea up to 3 times a day
- Children under 2 years of age: only on medical advice
- For each cup (125 ml), pour boiling water over 1 tea bag, cover and leave to infuse for 10 minutes. Then squeeze the tea bag well and drink the tea lukewarm in small sips. The tea may be sweetened to taste.
- If symptoms worsen or there is no improvement after 7 days, consult a doctor.
Notes:
- Dr Kottas’ Cough and Bronchial Tea must not be taken if you are hypersensitive (allergic) to any of the active ingredients, to any other member of the Lamiaceae family, or to aniseed.
- Particular caution is required when taking Dr Kottas’ Cough and Bronchial Tea: if you experience shortness of breath, fever or purulent sputum, you must consult a doctor.
- Side effects: Hypersensitivity reactions and stomach complaints have been observed.
