Active ingredients/action
- Cough expectorant and cough suppressant: When viruses and bacteria attack the bronchial tubes, the body responds with an inflammatory reaction: the bronchial tubes produce increased amounts of thick mucus to help expel the intruders through coughing. At the onset of a cold, a dry, irritating cough prevents the sufferer from getting any rest, either during the day or at night. A cough soother can help reduce the irritation at night. Once phlegm starts to be produced after a few days, expectorants can make it easier to cough it up: they thin the phlegm so that it can be coughed up more easily. Some cough medicines available from the chemist can be used both as expectorants and as cough suppressants. Ask your chemist.
- Thyme: Thyme is not only an interesting culinary herb but also an important medicinal plant for treating coughs and as a disinfectant. Its greatest strength lies in its beneficial effect on coughs. The active ingredients in thyme help to clear stubborn, thick mucus. The essential oil of thyme, which is also present in the dried extract, also has antiseptic properties.
- Marshmallow: Marshmallow belongs to the mallow family and has been highly prized as a medicinal plant since ancient times. The active ingredients from the marshmallow root soothe irritation of the mucous membranes and help to reduce the urge to cough. Indications: Inflammation of the mouth and throat and associated dry cough.
Dosage form
Directions for use
- Adults and adolescents aged 12 and over: 10 ml every 3 hours, up to 6 times a day; total daily dose up to 60 ml.
- Children aged 4–11 years: 5 ml every 3 hours, up to 6 times a day; total daily dose up to 30 ml.
- Use in children under 4 years of age: Use in children under 4 years of age is not recommended, as there is insufficient data available and medical advice should be sought.
Ingredients
- The active ingredients are: 5 ml (= 5.7 g) contain: 0.77 g liquid thyme extract (Thymi herba, drug-to-extract ratio (DEV) 1:2–2.5; extraction solvent: a mixture of 90% (v/v) ethanol, 10% ammonia solution, 85% glycerol and water for extraction purposes in a ratio of 35:0.5:10:54.5) 0.66 g liquid extract of marshmallow root (Althaeae radix, drug-to-extract ratio (DER) 1:20, extraction solvent: water)
- The other ingredients are: Raspberry juice concentrate (contains sucrose, glucose and fructose), ascorbic acid, ethanol, sucrose, methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate, propyl 4-hydroxybenzoate, purified water.
