Mucomat cough suppressant 2.13 mg/ml oral solution is used for the symptomatic treatment of dry cough in adults and children aged 6 years and over. The medicine is an antitussive, it reduces the overstimulation of the cough centre and thus normalises the cough reflex.

Consult a doctor if your cough symptoms worsen, you experience chest pain or your cough lasts longer than a week. Mucomat cough suppressant is only indicated for temporary use and must not be used continuously for longer than 2 weeks.

The active ingredient pentoxyverine contained in Mucomat solution is used for the short-term treatment of irritating coughs. Pentoxyverine develops its main antitussive effect by increasing the irritation threshold in the cough centre. Its effect is comparable to that of dextromethorphan. In addition, pentoxyverine has a slight bronchodilator effect.

As pentoxyverine does not affect breathing, Mucomat solution can also be used as a cough suppressant for underlying diseases such as asthma or COPD. The antitussive effect of pentoxyverine starts about 10 minutes after ingestion and lasts for about 6 hours. The good tolerability of pentoxyverine allows a therapy duration of up to 2 weeks in self-medication. No potential for dependence or abuse has been identified.

Children 6-15 years:

20 to 26kg: 5 ml 3-4 times daily
27 to 45kg: 7.5 ml 3-4 times a day
46 to 60kg: 15 ml 3-4 times a day

Adolescents > 15 years and adults:

> 60kg: 15 ml 3-4 times daily

Advice:

If the cough also causes a sore throat, it is recommended to gargle with the dosed amount of solution before swallowing. If the dry cough causes problems sleeping, the last dose should be taken shortly before going to bed.

Ingredients

The active ingredient is pentoxyverine citrate. 1 ml of the oral solution contains 2.13 mg pentoxyverine citrate corresponding to 1.35 mg pentoxyverine.
The other ingredients are Benzoic acid, liquid sorbitol (non-crystallising) (E420), glycerol, propylene glycol, citric acid monohydrate, sodium citrate dihydrate, saccharin sodium, pear flavouring, juniper brandy flavouring (contains flavouring agents, benzyl alcohol [E1519] and alpha-tocopherol [E307]), purified water.
