Ambrohexal 7.5 mg/ml solution is an over-the-counter medicine. This expectorant cough medicine loosens congested and thick, sticky secretions from the bronchial walls and makes it easier to cough them up. By reducing the viscosity of the mucus and stimulating the ciliated epithelium, it is intended to promote the clearance of mucus.
Indications
For the management of acute and chronic respiratory conditions associated with impaired mucus production and clearance, such as:
- Acute and chronic inflammation of the bronchial mucosa (bronchitis)
- Asthma-like (asthmoid) bronchitis
- Bronchial asthma with impaired mucus clearance
If you do not feel any better, or if your condition worsens, after 4 to 5 days, consult your doctor.

Directions for use
For oral use:
- Adults and adolescents over 12 years of age should take 4 ml three times a day at the start of treatment, equivalent to 80 drops three times a day. For long-term use, the dose may be reduced to 2 ml three times a day, equivalent to 40 drops three times a day.
- Children: Infants up to 2 years of age should take 1 ml twice daily, equivalent to 20 drops twice daily. Children aged 2 to 6 years should take 1 ml three times daily, equivalent to 20 drops three times daily. Children aged 6 to 12 years should take 2 ml 2–3 times a day, equivalent to 40 drops 2–3 times a day.
For inhalation:
- Adults, adolescents and children over 6 years of age should inhale 2–3 ml once or twice daily, equivalent to 40–60 drops once or twice daily.
- Infants and children under 6 years of age should inhale 2 ml 1–2 times daily, equivalent to 40 drops 1–2 times daily.
Method of administration:
For oral use or inhalation.
It is recommended to take the solution diluted with tea, fruit juice or water after each meal. The product comes with a measuring cup marked in 1–10 ml increments. For inhalation , a suitable inhaler should be used (follow the instructions for use). When using Ambrohexal in a respirator (inhaler), the solution may be mixed with normal saline in a 1:1 ratio to achieve optimal humidification.
As inhaling aerosols too deeply may cause a cough reflex, you should breathe in and out normally whilst inhaling. For particularly sensitive patients, it is recommended that the inhalation solution be warmed to body temperature. Patients with bronchial asthma should use a bronchodilator before inhaling Ambrohexal (ask your doctor).
Ambrohexal must not be mixed with other solutions.
Duration of treatment:
The duration of treatment should be decided on an individual basis, depending on the indication and the course of the illness.
If you do not feel any better, or if your condition worsens, after 4 to 5 days, contact your doctor.
During treatment with Ambrohexal, you should drink plenty of fluids (e.g. juice, tea, water). This will help to support the expectorant effect of Ambrohexal.
Notes: Ambrohexal must only be given to young children under 2 years of age on medical advice.
Ingredients
- What Ambrohexal contains - The active ingredient is ambroxol hydrochloride. 1 ml of solution (equivalent to 20 drops) contains 7.5 mg of ambroxol hydrochloride.
- The other ingredients are: Citric acid, sodium disulphite (E 223), sodium hydroxide, methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate (E 218), propyl 4-hydroxybenzoate (E 216), purified water.
