Too little exercise, a low-fibre diet and a lack of fluids are the most common causes of constipation. You can usually get a sluggish bowel under control again by changing your lifestyle. If, after a few days, nothing is working, plant-based substances such as psyllium and linseed have proven effective. These swell up with plenty of water in the bowel and increase the bowel volume. This quickly eliminates mild constipation in particular. However, the swelling substances can only do their work in the intestine if you drink around 2 litres of liquid.

Synthetic substances such as macrogol, lactulose or sorbitol can be more effective than bulking agents for more stubborn constipation. They have a double effect. They draw water into the bowel, the amount of stool increases and the stool becomes softer. Lactulose has a third effect. The bacteria decompose the substance, gases are formed which also stimulate the bowel. As the effect can wear off somewhat over time, the active ingredient macrogol is recommended for prolonged use.
