Dr Kottas LaxativeTea is a herbal medicinal tea with the active ingredients buckthorn bark, senna leaves, peppermint leaves, fennel fruits and caraway fruits. Dr Kottas Laxative Tea is a herbal medicinal product for use in constipation, especially with cramp-like symptoms.
Buckthorn (Cortex Frangulae)
- The alder buckthorn is a thornless shrub growing 1 to 3 metres high, rarely a small tree. The inconspicuous flowers in umbels produce spherical fruits, which are initially green, later turn red and then black-violet when ripe. The fresh bark, fruits and leaves are poisonous! The bark is used medicinally. It should be stored for at least a year before use.
- Effect: Buckthorn bark is a mild, natural laxative that develops its effect in the large intestine. It is also used to relieve flatulence.
Senna leaf (Folium Sennae, Fructus Sennae angustifoliae, Fructus Sennae acutifoliae)
- The leaves and fruits used medicinally come from two different species. Both are shrubs of 0.5 to 1.5 metres in height. The flowers of both species are yellow, axillary and arranged in racemes. They develop into broad, flat, brown kidney-shaped pods that carry 7 to 10 seeds.
- Effect: Senna leaves are among the most reliable laxatives. The fruits also have a laxative effect, but are milder. The gastrointestinal passage is accelerated and the water content of the stool is increased. Due to the soft stool, senna leaves and fruits can also be used for anal fissures, haemorrhoids and after surgery.
Peppermint (Folium Menthae piperita)
- Peppermint is a spontaneous cross between two species of mint (M. spicata and M. aquatica). It is sterile, i.e. it cannot reproduce naturally. It was first discovered in England in 1696 in a field of spearmint and has been cultivated in the form of seedlings ever since. It grows up to 90 cm high and contains essential oil. The leaves have a characteristic odour when crushed.
- Effect: The main active ingredient in peppermint is essential oil, especially menthol. Peppermint leaves are used to treat colds and headaches and relieve cramp-like complaints in the biliary tract and gastrointestinal tract.
Fennel (Fructus Foeniculi amari)
- Fennel is an annual to perennial plant that is anchored in the soil with a mostly fleshy root and can grow up to 2 metres high. The stems are branched at the top with pinnately lobed leaves. The small, yellow flowers bloom from July to September and are arranged in umbels. The oil of the fenchon-rich fruits is used medicinally.
- Effect: Helps with digestive complaints, bloating, flatulence and cramp-like complaints in the gastrointestinal tract (especially in infants and small children) and helps to loosen mucus in catarrhs of the upper respiratory tract.
Caraway (Fructus Carvi)
- The parent plant is a biennial, 30 cm to 100 cm tall and grows in meagre meadows, pastures and along roadsides. Its aromatic scent and caraway flavour are typical. The caraway used medicinally comes from cultivated plants.
- Effect: The most important active ingredient in caraway is the essential oil, which consists largely of carvone. Carvone has been described as having an antimicrobial, antispasmodic and flatulent effect. Caraway is the best herbal carminative (remedy for flatulence). Caraway is also used to alleviate complaints such as bloating, mild cramp-like gastrointestinal disorders and digestive problems in babies.
