When we breathe, vital oxygen flows into our lungs. However, it is not only the air that we so urgently need that enters our body, but also germs, dust, bacteria and dirt.

The airways are a kind of open circuit between the outside world and the inner organism and channel air into those areas of the lungs where oxygen is released from the air we breathe into the blood. When we breathe out, carbon dioxide is transported out of the lungs via the airways. In a healthy person, the immune system provides defence against external influences that are harmful to the body. The mucous membranes transport such tiny substances out of the airways. However, if our defence system is weakened by environmental pollution, alcohol abuse, heavy smoking or stress, for example, this process no longer works properly. Bacteria and viruses in particular can be the cause of an acute respiratory infection.

A rough distinction is made between acute and chronic respiratory diseases:

  • Acute respiratory diseases: These include colds, which usually present as an upper respiratory tract infection, or lower respiratory tract infections (colds, flu, tonsillitis, acute bronchitis or pneumonia). Respiratory diseases are usually described as "acute" if they are triggered by viruses, bacteria or fungi and the symptoms manifest themselves over a limited period of time.
  • Chronic respiratory diseases: In contrast to the acute form, chronic respiratory diseases cannot be limited in time. Environmental influences such as viruses can also be responsible (allergy, hereditary predisposition, pathological changes in the tissue). Chronic diseases of the lower respiratory tract include chronic bronchitis, bronchial asthma or COPD. The majority of these chronic diseases are characterised by chronic coughing, shortness of breath and pain in the chest area.
It is important that the doctor makes the correct diagnosis so that the respiratory disease can be treated in a targeted manner. In our mail-order pharmacy you will find a range of products from well-known manufacturers that promise relief.
