Dr Kottas St John’s Wort Tea is a medicinal tea containing the active ingredient St John’s wort. Dr Kottas St John’s Wort Tea is a traditional herbal medicinal product intended to provide relief from temporary mental exhaustion.

The use of this traditional herbal medicinal product for the stated indication is based solely on long-standing use.

St John’s Wort (Herba Hyperici)

  • St John’s wort is a perennial plant 25–90 cm tall with persistent runners. Its name indicates that the plant flowers around St John’s Day (24 June). When the yellow flowers are crushed, a red oil is secreted. Its characteristic features are the elongated oval leaves, which appear perforated.
  • Effect: St. John’s wort’s mood-lifting effect has proven highly effective in treating psychovegetative disorders, depressive moods, anxiety and/or nervous restlessness.

Dosage form

Tea bags

Directions for use

  • Adults and young people aged 12 and over: 1 cup of tea 3 times a day
  • Pour boiling water over 1 tea bag per cup (125 ml), cover and leave to infuse for 10 minutes. Then squeeze the tea bag well and drink the tea lukewarm in small sips. The tea may be sweetened to taste.
  • Do not take for longer than 6 weeks without a break. If symptoms worsen during use or if there is no improvement after 6 weeks, consult a doctor.
  • Use in children under 12 years of age is not recommended, as there is insufficient data available.

Notes:

Dr Kottas’ St John’s Wort tea must not be taken

  • if you are hypersensitive (allergic) to St John’s wort.
  • if you suffer from photosensitivity of the skin or are undergoing concurrent treatments that cause photosensitivity of the skin

if you are also taking

  • cyclosporine, tacrolimus (medicines taken following organ transplants)
  • indinavir and other medicines used in anti-HIV treatment
  • irinotecan and other cytostatic agents (medicines used to treat cancer)
  • warfarin or phenprocoumon (blood-thinning medicines).

Special care is required when taking Dr Kottas’ St John’s Wort tea:

  • In fair-skinned individuals, taking St John’s wort preparations followed by exposure to sunlight may lead to skin reactions, such as sunburn-like redness.
  • People who are sensitive to light should therefore avoid intense UV exposure (prolonged sunbathing, sunlamps, solariums) whilst using this product.

Taking Dr Kottas St John’s Wort tea with other medicines:

  • Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, even if they are over-the-counter medicines.
  • St John’s wort can lower the levels of other medicines in the blood and thereby reduce their effects.
  • St. John’s Wort must therefore not be taken with certain medicines used in organ transplants or for autoimmune diseases (cyclosporine, tacrolimus when used systemically, sirolimus), those used to treat HIV infections (amprenavir, indinavir and other protease inhibitors, nevirapine), and those used to treat cancer (irinotecan, imatinib).
  • Particular caution is advised when taking St John’s wort alongside any medicines whose metabolism may be accelerated by St John’s wort (e.g. medicines containing the active ingredients:
  • phenprocoumon, warfarin, amitriptyline, fexofenadine, methadone, simvastatin, digoxin, ivabradine, verapamil, finasteride or certain medicines belonging to the benzodiazepine class). It is possible that these medicines may not be as effective as they should be. If you are unsure, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
  • This may also lead to increased breakthrough bleeding with oral contraceptives and may reduce the effectiveness of the ‘pill’ as a method of contraception. Women taking oral contraceptives should therefore use additional contraceptive measures.
  • Before any planned surgical procedure, your doctor should assess any potential interactions with medicines used during general or local anaesthesia. If necessary, Dr Kottas’ St John’s Wort tea should be discontinued.
  • St John’s wort may reduce the concentration of certain medicines used to treat depression (active ingredients e.g.: sertraline, paroxetine, nefazodone), medicines used to treat anxiety (active ingredient: buspirone) or certain migraine medicines (active ingredients: triptans) in the central nervous system, thereby enhancing their effects. When taken at the same time as these medicines, symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, anxiety, restlessness or confusion may be exacerbated in individual cases.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Always ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking any medicines. As there is insufficient data available, this product is not recommended during pregnancy or whilst breastfeeding.

If you have taken more Dr Kottas St John’s Wort tea than you should:

  • Following the intake of up to 4.5 g of St John’s Wort dry extract per day (equivalent to approximately 13 tea bags of Dr Kottas St John’s Wort Tea) over a period of 2 weeks, and in addition 15 g of St John’s Wort dry extract (equivalent to approximately 44 tea bags of Dr Kottas St John’s Wort tea) were reported to have experienced seizures and convulsions prior to hospitalisation.
  • Due to a possible increase in photosensitivity, patients should be protected from sunlight and other UV light for 2 weeks following the ingestion of massive overdoses.
