The intestinal mucosa - the home of the intestinal flora.

Millions of adults in Germany are aware of the importance of healthy intestinal flora for the metabolism, immune system and psyche - and are already taking preparations containing bacteria. However, it is less well known that the intestinal flora is dependent on an intact intestinal mucosa.

Continuous mucus formation is the basis.

The intestinal mucosa constantly produces mucus. This mucus forms a physical protective layer on the intestinal mucosa and also provides a home for thousands of beneficial bacteria in the intestinal flora.

If mucus production is impaired by stimulants, certain medications or other external influences, the barrier function can decrease, as can the function of the intestinal flora. The intestinal mucosa can then come into direct contact with foreign substances, which can penetrate the body more easily. Conversely, a rich intestinal flora with all its benefits can develop on a thick layer of mucus.

Akkermansia muciniphila - loves the intestinal mucosa.

Akkermansia muciniphila also lives in this mucus layer (muciniphila means mucus-loving). Although it is one of the most common intestinal bacteria, it was only successfully isolated in 2004.

In the short time since its discovery, the microorganism has already become the subject of numerous studies: Research is currently being conducted into how a protein called "Amuc-1100" on the outer envelope of Akkermansia muciniphila interacts with the mucus-producing cells of the intestinal mucosa.

Akkermansia muciniphila is a strictly anaerobic bacterium, i.e. it dies on contact with oxygen in the air. Using a pasteurisation process, it has now been possible to ensure the stability and availability of the bacterium for ingestion in a food supplement. This process also increases and improves the accessibility of the "Amuc-1100" protein. The postbiotic obtained in this way is called Pasteurised Akkermansia MucT®.

Important advantages of ProBio-Cult® AKK1:

1. Pasteurised Akkermansia MucT® does not compete or interact with diet or supplements. Its properties are independent of additional fibre or vitamins.

• Vitamin B2 (riboflavin): Riboflavin contributes to the maintenance of normal mucous membranes, including the intestinal mucosa.
• Camomile flower extract with apigenin: The natural flavonoid apigenin appears to be able to interact with the intestinal flora. Research is currently being carried out into how and whether this may influence the composition and function of the intestinal flora.²)
