Sun protection - beware of skin damage

"Our skin remembers every sunburn"! In our society, we perceive tanned skin as attractive and particularly appealing. Sunbathing also makes us happy, as the skin produces happiness hormones as soon as it is kissed by sunlight. However, as pleasant as the sun may be, we should only enjoy it in moderation, as too much UVA and UVB radiation can cause lasting damage to our bodies.

The good news is that everyone can enjoy the sun in small doses. This includes particularly sensitive, allergic and atopic skin as well as children's skin, which is particularly in need of protection.

Rules for correct sun protection
  • Enjoy the sun in moderation. No sunscreen offers 100% UV protection. Do not spend too long in the blazing sun and avoid the midday sun between 11:00 and 15:00 - even if your skin is already tanned and/or the sky is overcast.
  • Sufficient protection: Apply plenty of sunscreen and evenly moisturise your skin. It is best to wait 30 minutes before going out into the sun so that the skin has formed a protective shield. When applying sunscreen, also remember to apply it to your ears, lips, neck, the edges of your bikini and the tops and bottoms of your feet. When it comes to sunscreen, a lot helps a lot. For reliable protection, the product should be applied thickly. An adult should apply about three tablespoons of sunscreen to their body.
  • Reapply sun cream regularly! Apply sunscreen regularly. Ideally every 2 hours. Especially after bathing and drying off and if you have sweated a lot. Even waterproof sun cream needs to be reapplied. The term "waterproof" only means that the sunscreen still offers at least half of the stated protection after 2 x 20 minutes in water. With "extra waterproof", the protection must still be half as high after 4 x 20 minutes.
  • Children need special protection: Pay attention to the little ones, because children's skin is very sensitive. Children should only go out in the sun wearing suitable clothing, headgear and glasses. Babies should not be exposed to direct sunlight for the first 6 months. Protect your child with a high SPF (50) or very high SPF (50+).
  • Pay attention to quality! Only use sunscreens with the UVA seal. They not only protect against UVB rays, but also against UVA rays and prevent skin ageing and other cell damage.
  • After-sun care: After-sun products help the skin to regenerate after prolonged exposure to the sun. They restore the moisture that the sun has previously removed.
Tip: Don't just use after-sun care for mild sunburn, but after every time you go out in the sun. Incidentally, a severe sunburn should always be examined by a doctor.
