They are unpleasant for every woman: swollen veins that lead to varicose veins. Although in principle they can form in any vein in the body, 90 per cent of them occur in the legs. Varicose veins indicate that the so-called superficial venous system is diseased (thrombophlebitis).
It is no consolation that these venous diseases are among the most common conditions in Austria. Women are affected two to four times more frequently than men. However, only around twelve per cent of those affected suffer from varicose veins to such an extent that they require medical treatment.
For haematoma and bruising
- A haematoma occurs when blood leaks into the surrounding tissue after an injury (e.g. a bruise). A bruise can be seen immediately or only after days, which later turns yellowish and then brownish in colour due to the various stages of blood decomposition.
- If deeper vessels are injured, the haemorrhage becomes visible as a swelling. The pressure exerted on the tissue by the leaking blood can cause pain. Extensive bleeding can impair the functionality of muscles and joints.
