Application
Rehydration (compensation of fluid and electrolyte loss, as recommended by the GPGE) with HiPP ORS 200 in the first 3 to 4 hours
Unless otherwise prescribed by the doctor, in the first 3 to 4 hours only ORS, approx. 10 ml per kg body weight (bw):
- Minimal diarrhoea (weight loss < 3% of bw): 20 to 30 ml / kg bw
- Mild to moderate diarrhoea: (weight loss 3-8% of bw): 30 - 80 ml / kg bw
- Severe diarrhoea (weight loss < 9% of bw): always consult a doctor; ORS 200 possibly as an oral supplement to intravenous fluid replacement
Rapid realimentation (food build-up) after 3 to 4 hours
- Breastfed infants continue to be breastfed during rehydration.
- Bottle-fed infants are fed their usual food again after the rehydration phase.
- After rehydration, infants who are already receiving complementary foods are given their usual complementary foods and formula in full quantity and concentration. If the course of the illness is severe, a gradual build-up of nutrition can also take place here.
- Older children can be quickly switched to their usual diet after rehydration, starting with easily digestible food in small portions. If this does not cause vomiting, they can return to their normal diet. Juices with a high sugar content (sucrose, fructose, sorbitol) should be avoided. Further fluid losses due to vomiting and/or diarrhoea should be compensated for with an additional 50 - 100 ml of HiPP ORS 200 for each watery stool/each vomiting period.
