Gelifend® vaginal gel is used to treat bacterial vaginosis with lactic acid and glycogen. Fast and effective relief from recurrent bacterial vaginosis thanks to the dual action approach.
What is GELIFEND® and what is it used for?
GELIFEND® is designed to restore the pH of the vagina when it is above the normal value of pH 3.8 - 4.5. A change in the normal pH level can affect the natural balance of the vaginal flora . The use of GELIFEND® normalises the pH level of the vagina, which promotes the restoration of normal vaginal flora. GELIFEND® is a vaginal gel containinglactic acid and glycogen.
GELIFEND® is used to:
- Restore and maintain the natural acidity of the vagina by creating a suitable environment in which lactic acid bacteria can proliferate;
- Treating increased vaginal discharge and an unpleasant odour;
- Treatment of the symptoms of bacterial vaginosis;
- Prevention of recurrence of bacterial vaginosis.
What is bacterial vaginosis?
The microorganisms that colonise the vagina are collectively referred to as vaginal flora .Lactic acid bacteria ("good" bacteria) are the bacteria that mainly occur in the vagina of a healthy woman. The number and type of bacteria present have a significant impact on a woman 's overall health. The pH value of the vagina is normally in the acidic range (pH 3.8 - 4.5). This value is maintained by the production of lactic acid when glycogen is metabolised by lactic acid bacteria. Normal vaginal flora ensures that an acidic pH value (3.8 - 4.5) is maintained and thus helps to prevent vaginal infections , as this value isunfavourable for the growth of "bad" bacteria.
Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is an infection that occurs when an increase in certain 'bad' bacteria alters the normal balance of bacteria in the vagina . Fluctuating hormone levels during the menstrual cycle, pregnancy and menopause can also disrupt the natural acidity of the vagina. Other factors that can have an influence are antibiotics, sexual intercourse (seminal fluid is alkaline), intrauterine devices (IUDs), vaginal douching (washing out the vagina) or the use of vaginal wash lotions or deodorants, as well as smoking. An imbalance in the vaginal environment can lead to infections such as bacterial vaginosis and candidiasis . The most common cause of recurrent vaginal infections is bacterial vaginosis.
How can I recognise bacterial vaginosis?
One sign is increased vaginal discharge paired with the following characteristics:
- noticeable odour - sometimes described as "fishy" and often worsens after intercourse;
- white or pale grey watery discharge.
Bacterial vaginosis does not necessarily cause pain, itching or irritation unlessthere is another condition such as vaginal yeast infections. Many women with bacterial vaginosis do not recognise it. Bacterial vaginosis is often confused with other vaginal infections. Your doctor can recognisethe presence of bacterial vaginosis with the help of a simple test.
How does GELIFEND® work?
GELIFEND® contains lactic acid, which acidifies the vagina and ensures a normal pH value of 3.8 to 4.5, thus creating ideal growth conditions for "good" bacteria (lactic acid bacteria). GELIFEND® also contains glycogen, which serves as a nutrient for the lactic acid bacteria. By quickly restoring the normal balance of vaginal flora, GELIFEND® ensures rapid elimination of unpleasant odours and treatment of irritation and excessive discharge.
