Lemon balm (Folium Melissae)
- This perennial, usually highly branched plant grows to a height of around 30 to 70 cm. Its egg-shaped leaves have a lemon-like odour and taste. The typical odour is due to the essential oil (with the main components citral and citronella).
- Effect: Lemon balm has a calming effect and helps with nervous sleep disorders and gastrointestinal complaints. Its antispasmodic effect alleviates stomach and bile problems.
Rosemary (Folium Rosmarini)
- Rosemary is a stately, aromatic-smelling shrub that can grow up to 2 metres tall. The small pale blue flowers bloom from March to May. The rosemary bush grows in Mediterranean countries.
- Effect: Rosemary has a tonic effect on the circulation and balances the nervous system. It is effective for upper abdominal colic and chronic weakness as well as low blood pressure.
Peppermint (Folium Menthae piperita)
- Peppermint is a spontaneous cross between two species of mint (M. spicata and M. aquatica). It is sterile, i.e. it cannot reproduce naturally. It was first discovered in England in 1696 in a field of spearmint and has been cultivated in the form of seedlings ever since. It grows up to 90 cm high and contains essential oil. The leaves have a characteristic odour when crushed.
- Effect: The main active ingredient in peppermint is essential oil, especially menthol. Peppermint leaves are used to treat colds and headaches and relieve cramp-like complaints in the biliary tract and gastrointestinal tract.
