Heartburn - many of us have experienced the burning sensation behind the breastbone. It is often a direct reaction of the body after a greasy or strongly flavoured meal, but stress can also lead to acid-related stomach pain.

The acid in the stomach flows back into the oesophagus and causes irritation there. The result is a burning sensation, known as heartburn.

The ingredients in Doppelherz Heartburn Acute + Protect are released during chewing and develop their physical effect in the stomach. The chewable tablets can therefore be used to treat gastro-oesophageal reflux to relieve the associated symptoms such as heartburn, heartburn during pregnancy, reflux oesophagitis, acid reflux, indigestion, nocturnal reflux symptoms, coughing and inflammation of the larynx and throat.

Physical effect:

Doppelherz Heartburn Acute + Protect is based on sodium alginate and carbonates. Sodium alginate (a natural polymer from brown algae) together with the carbonates forms a protective layer that (mechanically) prevents stomach acid from rising into the oesophagus. This protects the mucous membranes of the oesophagus and quickly relieves discomfort. Bicarbonate also helps to reduce the acidity of the stomach. Due to its special properties, the product protects the mucous membrane of the oesophagus from acid attack with a barrier effect. This promotes regeneration and helps to prevent the risk of recurrence of reflux oesophagitis.

Is there a difference between heartburn and reflux?

In fact, heartburn and acid reflux are two different things. "Reflux" is the backflow of corrosive stomach acid into the oesophagus. Normally, this is prevented by a sphincter muscle between the stomach and the oesophagus. However, if the sphincter no longer fulfils its function for a variety of reasons, the gastric juice rises into the oesophagus.

If the gastric juice reaches the oesophagus and irritates the mucous membranes there, this is known as "heartburn". Heartburn is therefore basically a symptom of reflux. The pain, which is often described as burning, can be located behind the breastbone, but can also radiate into the throat and pharynx. Acid reflux or heartburn can actually have a significant impact on quality of life. If these problems occur frequently, a doctor should be consulted to be on the safe side.

Directions for use

Adults and children over 12 years: 2 or 4 tablets after meals and before going to bed. The tablets must be chewed thoroughly. After ingestion, rinse with water.
Advice: Do not take in case of severe renal insufficiency. If you are hypersensitive to the components of the medicinal product, you must not take it. If side effects occur, you must discontinue treatment and consult your doctor. The product may impair the absorption of oral medicines. Please ask your doctor for advice if you are taking other oral medicines. In any case, a time interval of 2 hours should be observed between taking the product and taking a medicine. If the symptoms do not improve after 7 days of treatment, please consult your doctor. The product may cause flatulence. Using the product as directed will reduce the likelihood of this occurring. This product contains approximately 100 mg (4.4 mmol) sodium and approximately 36 mg (0.9 mmol) calcium when taken in a single dose (equivalent to 2 tablets of 1 gram). Please consult your doctor if you are on a low salt diet, e.g. if you suffer from high blood pressure, impaired heart, kidney or liver function or hypercalcaemia, nephrocalcinosis or recurrent calcium-containing kidney stones. Keep this product out of the reach and sight of children. Store the product at a temperature between 8 °C and 25 °C in a dry place, away from sources of light and heat.
