melamed® melatonin capsules are a high-quality dietary supplement designed to help you fall asleep more quickly. melamed® can also help reduce the subjective symptoms of jet lag.
Time taken to fall asleep
The time taken to fall asleep is defined as the period between going to bed and actually falling asleep. This varies greatly from person to person, but ideally should not exceed 20 minutes. A significantly prolonged time taken to fall asleep reduces the total duration of sleep. This can be very unpleasant for the person affected and cause stress.
Jet lag
Normally, the ‘internal’ clock (circadian rhythm) regulates a person’s sleep-wake cycle. The disruption to the sleep-wake cycle caused by flying across several time zones is known as jet lag. Jet lag can also lead to a longer time taken to fall asleep and, in some cases, even to insomnia.
Shift work
However, people in certain types of work (alternating day and night shifts) are also affected by disruptions to their daily sleep-wake cycle. Due to the changing working hours, the ‘internal clock’ has to be reset repeatedly – with effects similar to those of jet lag.
What is melamed® and what does it do?
melamed® contains the hormone melatonin. This substance, which is produced naturally by the body, is synthesised from serotonin in the pineal gland. Its production and, at the same time, its secretion begin when darkness falls and reach their peak at around three o’clock in the morning. Melatonin production decreases steadily as we age, although this does not necessarily lead to problems falling asleep. The role of melatonin in regulating the sleep-wake cycle is scientifically recognised in the context of shift work and travel across time zones. Melatonin helps to alleviate the subjective symptoms of jet lag and to reduce the time taken to fall asleep. This can help prevent problems caused by insomnia.
