Nicorette® 2 mg Classic Chewing Gum belongs to a group of medicines used to help people give up smoking. Nicorette contains nicotine as its active ingredient, which is absorbed into the body through the oral mucosa.

The supply of nicotine via Nicorette ensures that the withdrawal symptoms associated with nicotine withdrawal do not occur, or at least occur in a significantly milder form, thereby reducing the patient’s craving for cigarettes. These withdrawal symptoms primarily include irritability, restlessness, anxiety, increased appetite, difficulty concentrating and trouble falling asleep, which in many cases lead patients to start smoking again. Nicorette serves as an aid and makes giving up smoking easier, even in difficult cases, although appropriate motivation, willpower and perseverance are essential prerequisites for any smoking cessation programme.

If you want to give up smoking or cut down on your cigarette consumption, Nicorette will support you in this and can therefore be used:

• to help smokers who wish to give up smoking
• as an aid for smokers during specific periods when smoking is not possible or desirable (temporary abstinence)
• to reduce cigarette consumption among smokers who do not wish to, or are unable to, give up smoking.

The success rate can be improved through additional counselling and supportive measures. If you smoke fewer than 20 cigarettes a day, Nicorette 2 mg chewing gum is suitable. If you smoke more than 20 cigarettes a day, Nicorette 4 mg chewing gum is more suitable.

How it works

NICORETTE® chewing gum releases nicotine when chewed, which is absorbed through the oral mucosa. Around 50 per cent of the total nicotine content in the chewing gum is absorbed by the body. Accordingly, a user absorbs approximately 1 mg of nicotine from a 2 mg piece of chewing gum, and approximately 2 mg from a 4 mg piece. When chewing a 2 mg piece of chewing gum, blood nicotine levels reach approximately one-third of the levels that would be achieved by smoking cigarettes; when chewing a 4 mg piece, they reach approximately two-thirds.

Directions for use

NICORETTE® chewing gum features the unique NDI (Nicotine Dosage Indicator), which makes it easier for you to use it correctly. Chew very slowly for about 1 minute until you notice a spicy/peppery taste. Then place the chewing gum between your teeth and cheek until the taste fades. Repeat these two steps for 30 minutes. Do not chew too hard! *This is followed by half an hour without chewing gum. Dosage for immediate cessation of smoking

The 2 mg nicotine chewing gum is suitable for smokers who smoke up to 20 cigarettes a day. If you smoke more than 20 cigarettes a day, you should use the 4 mg nicotine chewing gum.

• Step 1: Weeks 1–6 – Approximately 1 NICORETTE® chewing gum per hour. The optimal amount is 8–12 pieces of nicotine chewing gum per day; a maximum of 24 pieces per day is permitted.
• Step 2: Weeks 7–12 – Reduce the number of pieces of chewing gum to 0 over the following 6 weeks.

Treatment should last for at least 4–6 weeks. Thereafter, the number of pieces of chewing gum should be reduced by the 12th week. Treatment lasting longer than 6 months is not recommended. Relapses may still occur even after six months. In such cases, it is advisable to keep a piece of chewing gum to hand.

Ingredients

• The active ingredient is: nicotine resin. Each piece of chewing gum contains 2 mg of nicotine as a resin in a special sugar-free chewing gum base.
• The other ingredients are: chewing gum base (contains butylhydroxytoluene (E 321)), sodium carbonate, sodium hydrogen carbonate, sorbitol, glycerol, flavourings.
