What is herpes?
Herpes is a viral infection of the skin that occurs on or near the lips. It is caused by the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1). The symptoms often begin with localised itching and a burning sensation on the skin. The skin swells and turns red, then small blisters appear. After a few days, the blisters dry into crusts. Herpes is highly contagious. The virus can be transmitted through kissing or other physical contact. As soon as the skin is healthy again, the herpes simplex virus can no longer be transmitted.
Causes of recurrent herpes?
A herpes infection is characterised by the fact that it can recur regularly. The causes include reduced defences, dry lips, illness, fever, sunburn or UV radiation. Unlike other parts of the body, the lips do not contain melanin, the natural filter against UV rays. This is why the lips react more sensitively to sunburn. Direct sunlight stimulates the virus so that herpes can develop. Good sun protection with a high sun protection factor on the lips is therefore a very important aspect of prevention.
Active ingredients
- L-lysine is an essential amino acid that replaces another amino acid, L-arginine, which plays a crucial role in the reproduction of herpes viruses.
- Echinacea - The echinacea plant is known for its antiviral, wound-healing and immunomodulating properties, even when applied topically.
- Zinc - Studies show that the application of zinc to cold sores shortens the healing time. Zinc oxides have a cooling effect and help the blisters to dry out. Zinc also acts as a mechanical barrier to prevent infection of the surrounding cells with herpes viruses.
