The multispecies probiotic colomed® 10 was developed for the targeted dietary treatment of diarrhoea that can occur as part of antibiotic therapy.

Antibiotic-associated diarrhoea (AAD)

Antibiotics are drugs that are used to treat infections caused by pathogenic bacteria. Unfortunately, antibiotics not only fight harmful bacteria, but also attack the beneficial bacterial species from the body's own intestinal flora. Antibiotics can therefore cause lasting damage to the natural intestinal flora and trigger diarrhoea. Diarrhoea is one of the most common side effects of antibiotic therapy and affects 5-25% of treated patients. This antibiotic-associated diarrhoea (AAD) can occur while taking antibiotics , but also for weeks afterwards. If the balance of intestinal bacteria is disturbed, there is a risk that potentially dangerous diarrhoea bacteria - e.g. the bacterium Clostridium difficile - will multiplydisproportionately .

Properties

colomed® 10 AAD sachets contain 10 bacterial strains capable of reproduction for targeted supplementation in the case of antibiotic-associated diarrhoea. The prebiotic fibre Nutriose® in combination with the enzyme amylase serves as an easily available food source for the bacterial strains in the intestine. Potassium, magnesium, chloride and manganese serve to compensate for increased losses in antibiotic-associated diarrhoea.

One sachet of colomed® 10 AAD sachet contains 5.5 billion bacteria capable of reproduction:

  • Bifidobacterium bifidum
  • Bifidobacterium lactis
  • Bifidobacterium longum
  • Enterococcus faecium
  • Lactobacillus acidophilus
  • Lactobacillus paracasei
  • Lactobacillus plantarum
  • Lactobacillus rhamnosus
  • Lactobacillus salvarius
  • Lactobacillus casei

The most important prerequisite for the effectiveness of a probiotic is that a sufficiently high number of bacteria survive the passage through the stomach and reach the intestine in an active form. Normally, the sensitive probiotic bacteria are quickly inactivatedin the acidic environment of the stomach.

How to use
Stir 1 sachet into 1/8 litre of water or juice 1-2 times a day and drink.

Tips:
  • colomed® should be taken at the same time as antibiotics, at least 2 hours after taking the antibiotics .
  • It is recommended to continue taking 1 sachet of colomed® daily for up to 2 weeks after the end of antibiotic therapy in orderto ensure the regeneration of the intestinal flora.
