- Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is the physiologically most important member of the family of fat-soluble vitamins, which fulfils the function of a prohormone and is converted to vitamin D via intermediate stages. The human organism is able to produce part of the vitamin D it needs as a precursor if it receives sufficient sunlight. This mechanism is subject to natural self-regulation in order to prevent excessive endogenous production. The skin's own production capacity decreases significantly with age. As far as the skin's exposure to sunlight is concerned, the German Nutrition Society assumes that in the months of October to March, natural sunlight is not sufficient to ensure that the body produces enough vitamin D to cover its needs. Dark-skinned people (skin type III) need more time in the sun to produce the same amount of vitamin D compared to fair-skinned people (skin type I/II).
- Vitamin D can also be absorbed through food. Unfortunately, with the exception of some edible mushrooms, sufficiently high vitamin D concentrations can only be found in foods of animal origin. This makes the supply of vitamin D a particular challenge for people with a vegan or vegetarian diet. Fatty fish such as salmon, herring or mackerel have a high vitamin D content. Egg yolk, liver and gouda cheese also contain vitamin D.
- The functions of vitamin D in the human body are extensive. Vitamin D plays an important role in 30 organs. The main function of vitamin D is the absorption and utilisation of calcium and phosphorus, a process that is controlled by the intestines, bones and kidneys.
- In children, vitamin D deficiency leads to serious disorders of bone growth and in adults, the link between vitamin D deficiency and loss of bone strength has been proven. Vitamin D therefore makes a significant contribution to maintaining bone and dental health as well as normal muscle function by improving nerve conduction velocity.
