Tea tree oil is a natural extract with a protective effect on the lips and mucous membranes. A thin layer of the cream provides long-lasting protection against the cold and weather and keeps the lips soft and hydrated. Tea tree oil is an essential oil extracted from the leaves of the tea tree Melaleuca alternifolia cheel (myrtle family), which only grows in a small swampy area along the north coast of New South Wales, Australia. This drug is characterised by a very strong odour and a quite intense and characteristic taste and has broad spectrum antimicrobial properties. It has also been shown to have an immunoprotective and soothing effect. Tea tree oil contains as many as 48 organic compounds, which illustrates its properties. Two of these are particularly important for its health-promoting effect: terpinene (over 30%) and cineole (less than 15%).
