Potassium iodide G.L. 65 mg tablets are used for iodine blockade of the thyroid gland in the event of nuclear accidents (prevention of the accumulation of radioactive iodine [iodine-131] in the thyroid gland).

This is a special medicine for use in radiation accidents involving the release of radioactive iodine. Do not take the medicine until expressly requested to do so by the competent authorities.

Accidents in nuclear facilities, especially in nuclear power plants, can also lead to the release of radioactive iodine under unfavourable circumstances. Radioactive iodine can be ingested through food or inhaled. It has the same chemical and biological properties as the natural iodine found in food and is therefore stored in the thyroid gland like normal, non-radioactive iodine.

Potassium iodide G.L. in the specified dosage prevents the absorption of radioactive iodine into the thyroid gland (so-called iodine blockade) and thus reduces the risk of developing thyroid cancer.

In the event of a risk from radioactive iodine, the responsible authorities provide information via the media about both the provision of potassium iodide tablets and the duration of their use.

Potassium iodide G.L. is not suitable for compensating iodine deficiency.

How to use

65 mg potassium iodide corresponds to 50 mg iodide.

Pregnant women and nursing mothers: 2 tablets each over a maximum of two days
Children up to 1 month: ¼ tablet once
Children from 1 to 36 months: ½ tablet
Children from 3 to under 13 years: 1 tablet
Adolescents and adults from 13 to under 40 years: 2 tablets

Division of the tablet

To obtain the dosage for children up to 36 months, the tablets should be divided using the break notches.
Place the tablet on a hard surface with the convex side facing outwards (angular textured side facing upwards).
To cut the tablet in half, press down on the edges of the tablet with 2 fingers.
To cut the tablet into quarters, press the centre of the tablet with one finger.

Further information:

Due to the distance to Ukraine, it is unlikely that it will be necessary to take iodine tablets. It is not advisable to take the tablets yourself. Self-medication with high-dose iodine tablets harbours health risks, but currently has no benefit whatsoever. The iodine tablets can only be effective if they are taken at the right time.

The active ingredient is: potassium iodide. 1 tablet contains 65 mg potassium iodide corresponding to 50 mg iodide.
