Potassium iodide G.L. 65 mg tablets are used to block the uptake of iodine by the thyroid gland in the event of a nuclear accident (to prevent the accumulation of radioactive iodine [iodine-131] in the thyroid gland).

This is a specialised medicine to be taken in the event of radiation accidents involving the release of radioactive iodine. Do not take this medicine unless expressly instructed to do so by the relevant authorities.

In the event of accidents at nuclear facilities, particularly at nuclear power stations, the release of radioactive iodine may occur under unfavourable circumstances. Radioactive iodine can be ingested through food or inhaled. It has the same chemical and biological properties as the natural iodine found in food and is therefore stored in the thyroid gland in the same way as normal, non-radioactive iodine.

Potassium iodide G.L., when taken at the specified dosage, prevents the uptake of radioactive iodine into the thyroid gland (known as iodine blockade) and thus reduces the risk of developing thyroid cancer.

In the event of a threat from radioactive iodine, the relevant authorities will provide information via the media regarding both the availability of potassium iodide tablets and the duration for which they should be taken.

Potassium iodide G.L. is not suitable for treating iodine deficiency.

Dosage form

Tablets

Usage

65 mg of potassium iodide corresponds to 50 mg of iodide.

Pregnant and breastfeeding women: 2 tablets each, for a maximum of two days
Infants up to 1 month old: a single dose of ¼ tablet
Children aged 1 to 36 months: ½ tablet
Children aged 3 to under 13 years: 1 tablet
Adolescents and adults aged 13 to under 40 years: 2 tablets

Splitting the tablet

To obtain the correct dose for children up to 36 months, the tablets should be split using the score lines.
Place the tablet with the convex side facing outwards on a hard surface (with the ridged side facing upwards).
To halve the tablet, press down on the edges with two fingers.
To quarter the tablet, press down on the centre of the tablet with one finger.

Given the distance from Ukraine, it is unlikely that taking iodine tablets will be necessary. You are advised not to take the tablets on your own initiative. Self-medication with high-dose iodine tablets poses health risks but currently offers no benefit whatsoever. The iodine tablets can only be effective if taken at the right time.
