Active ingredients

Belight3™

Blend of French grape seed extract, grape marc extract, liquorice extract and protected vitamin C. These ingredients have a strong antioxidant effect and act at different levels against hyperpigmentation of the skin. Grape pomace extract is rich in viniferin and resveratrol; grape seed extract in flavanols, PACs and catechins; liquorice extract in glabidrin and glycyrrhizic acid. Each of the botanical ingredients in Belight3™ has the ability to regulate tyrosinase activity. In the blend, this ability is further enhanced by their synergistic action, preventing hyperpigmentation of the skin.

Niacinamide/niacin/vitamin B3

Niacinamide has an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect and thus protects against stresses such as UVA/UVB rays and environmental pollution. It has been shown to delay cell ageing by increasing the level of NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide), which decreases with skin ageing, and reducing ROS in the mitochondria. Niacinamide also increases the expression of collagen and various components of the skin barrier. It is therefore a useful ingredient against hyperpigmentation and skin ageing.

Pigmentation spots

Hyperpigmentation of the skin is a common phenomenon and is caused by excessive production of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin colour. This skin condition can manifest itself in various forms, including freckles, melasma, moles, sun spots (lentigo solaris) and age spots. The triggers of pigment spots include UV rays, ageing, hormonal imbalances and genetic predisposition.

The complex process of melanogenesis can be summarised in three main phases:

1. Stimulation: when the skin is exposed to sunlight, melanocyte stimulating factor (MSF) is released, which stimulates melanocytes to produce melanin.
2. Melanin production: Melanogenesis takes place within the melanocytes, in the melanosomes (specialised cell organelles). Here, the enzyme tyrosinase catalyses the hydroxylation of L-tyrosine to L-DOPA, which is further oxidised to dopaquinone. The dopaquinone is then converted into various forms of melanin.
3. Melanin transfer: The melanin produced in the melanosomes is transported from the melanocytes to the keratinocytes (skin cells that make up the upper layers of the epidermis).

Here the melanosomes are broken down and the melanin accumulates around the cell nucleus and protects it from UV damage. Excessive melanin production leads to hyperpigmentation of the skin.
