Barberry (Berberis vulgaris L.) is a member of the barberry family. The most important ingredients of barberry root include alkaloids such as berberine and jatrorrhizin, tannins, resin and wax. The peeled bark of the barberry root is used for barberry root bark. It is said to strengthen the gall bladder and other digestive organs, have a diuretic effect, counteract sluggish digestion and harmonise blood pressure and pulse rate. The extract is rich in berberine (12 - 15 %), which is said to have astringent properties. It is beneficial for damaged skin and reduces growths. Barberry root bark extract clarifies and protects the skin and is ideal for the care of acne and blemished skin.
