Octeangin antisept is a medicinal product containing the active ingredient octenidine dihydrochloride. Octenidine dihydrochloride is an antiseptic and combats pathogens by disrupting their cellular function. Octeangin antisept is used for the short-term supportive treatment of inflammation of the mucous membranes of the mouth and throat, which is accompanied by typical symptoms such as pain, redness and swelling.

Octeangin antisept is intended for use in adults and young people aged 12 years and over. If you do not feel any better, or if your condition worsens, after 4 days, consult a doctor.

This is where Octeangin® helps, with its tried-and-tested active ingredient octenidine, which is effective against a wide range of germs:

  • Bacteria (e.g. Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa)
  • Enveloped viruses (e.g. influenza, Covid-19, herpes)
  • Fungi (e.g. Candida albicans)

Properties

  • Active ingredient Octenidine: Octenidine exerts its antiseptic effect particularly on mucous membranes, thereby combating bacterial pathogens, certain viruses and fungi.
  • Patented lozenge: For the first time in Austria, octenidine is available as the active ingredient in a patented lozenge: the antiseptic effect of octenidine has been proven for decades.
  • Pleasant formulation: Adults and young people aged 12 and over can take one lozenge every 2 to 3 hours, allowing it to dissolve slowly in the mouth. The maximum daily dose of 6 lozenges must not be exceeded.
  • Good tolerability: Octeangin® is well tolerated.

The most common inflammations of the mouth and throat include:

Inflammation in the mouth

Inflammation in the mouth is usually caused by bacterial pathogens. Depending on the clinical presentation, these can be categorised as:

  • Minor sores in the mouth. Bacteria often have an easy time of it with open sores in the mouth: they can penetrate the tissue, spread and cause inflammation.
  • Gum inflammation ( gingivitis). This is usually caused by poor oral hygiene. If bacterial build-up between the teeth (plaque) is not removed regularly, it can multiply over time and cause inflammation.
  • Inflammation of the periodontium (periodontitis). This can develop from untreated gingivitis.
  • Inflammation of the oral mucosa (stomatitis). As well as bacteria, viruses (e.g. herpes viruses) or fungi, amongst other things, can cause inflammation of the oral mucosa. Inflammation of the oral mucosa can also lead to inflammation of the gums.

Inflammation in the throat

Inflammation of the throat often occurs as part of a common cold. Various areas of the throat may be affected:

  • Pharyngitis. This is usually caused by common cold viruses.
  • Tonsillitis. If the tonsils become inflamed and produce pus, this is often caused by a bacterial infection.
  • Laryngitis. This can occur as part of a cold when, during a flu-like infection, the pathogen – usually a virus – spreads downwards from the upper airways towards the larynx.

Inflammation of the mouth and throat can also have other causes, such as reflux or the use of certain medicines. In such cases, a doctor should be consulted to determine the cause of the inflammation.

Octenidine

  • Octenidine dihydrochloride, or octenidine for short, is a disinfectant known for its antiseptic efficacy in combating bacteria, fungi and certain viruses, particularly in the disinfection of wounds and mucous membranes. Due to its strong surfactant properties, octenidine reacts with both the components of the cell wall and the membrane of the microbial cell, thereby disrupting cell function.
  • Octeangin® is the first product in Austria to make octenidine available in the form of a lozenge. Its antiseptic action is utilised in the treatment of inflammation of the oral and pharyngeal mucous membranes.
