Product information "Niconex 1 mg/spray for use in the oral cavity, solution, 13.2 ml"
Niconex® Spray helps you if you want to cut down on your cigarette consumption or give up smoking altogether. With just 2 sprays, you can ease your craving for a cigarette in just 30 seconds.
Niconex is used to help you give up smoking if you wish to stop, or to help you cut down on your cigarette consumption (smoking reduction), with the aim of eventually quitting smoking completely. This is a type of treatment known as nicotine replacement therapy.
Niconex alleviates nicotine withdrawal symptoms, including the urge to smoke – that is, the discomfort you experience when you stop smoking. If you suddenly stop supplying your body with nicotine by smoking tobacco, you may experience various types of unpleasant sensations known as withdrawal symptoms. By using Niconex, you can prevent or reduce these unpleasant sensations and the urge to smoke. This is because you continue to supply your body with a small amount of nicotine for a short period of time. Niconex contains no tar, carbon monoxide or other toxins found in cigarette smoke.
If possible, seek additional advice and support to increase your chances of giving up smoking.

Directions for use
- People under the age of 18 must not use Niconex.
- Consult your doctor if, after 6 weeks, you have not been able to reduce the number of sprays used or your cigarette consumption, or if you need to use Niconex for longer than 6 months. Niconex is normally used for 3 months, but for no longer than 6 months.
- The instructions for using Niconex depend on whether you are giving up smoking straight away or gradually reducing the number of cigarettes you smoke before giving up completely.
- Important: Do not exceed the recommended maximum daily dose of 64 sprays within 16 hours (4 sprays per hour over 16 hours).
Smoking cessation with immediate cessation
- The aim is to stop smoking immediately and to use Niconex to reduce cravings.
- Do not use more than 2 sprays at any one time or 4 sprays per hour over a 16-hour period. Over a 24-hour period, the maximum dose is 64 sprays within 16 hours.
- The following overview shows the recommended step-by-step approach to using Niconex.
Step 1: Weeks 1 to 6
- Use 1 or 2 sprays when you would normally smoke a cigarette or when you feel the urge to smoke. Use one spray first and, if this does not relieve your craving within a few minutes, use a second spray. If 2 sprays are required, you can take 2 sprays in quick succession for subsequent uses. Most smokers need 1 or 2 sprays every 30 to 60 minutes.
- For example, if you smoke an average of 15 cigarettes a day, use 1 or 2 sprays at least 15 times throughout the day.
Step 2: Weeks 7 to 9
- Start to reduce the number of sprays per day. By the end of week 9, you should be using only HALF the average number of sprays per day used in Step 1.
Step 3: Weeks 10 to 12
- Continue to reduce the number of sprays per day so that by week 12 you are using no more than 4 sprays per day. Stop using Niconex once you have reduced your usage to 2 to 4 sprays per day.
Reducing smoking with the aim of eventually quitting
- The aim is to gradually replace some of your cigarettes with Niconex. Once you have achieved this, you can then use the spray to give up cigarettes completely. Eventually, you will also stop using the spray.
- If you feel a strong urge to smoke, use 1 to 2 sprays instead of a cigarette to satisfy your craving. The spray is intended to replace the cigarette, so do not smoke shortly after using the spray. Using the spray without reducing the number of cigarettes you smoke will lead to nausea. Reduce the number of cigarettes you smoke per day as much as possible and replace them with a spray. If, after 6 weeks, you have not been able to reduce the number of cigarettes you smoke each day, speak to a doctor. As soon as you feel ready to do so, but no later than 12 weeks after starting treatment, you should stop smoking completely. Once you have given up smoking, gradually reduce the number of sprays you use each day. Once you only need 2 to 4 sprays a day, stop using Niconex completely.
- Do not use more than 2 sprays in quick succession or 4 sprays per hour over a 16-hour period. Over a 24-hour period, the maximum dose is 64 sprays within 16 hours.
- Once you have finished treatment, you may be tempted to start smoking again. You should therefore keep any unused spray to hand, as the urge to smoke can arise very suddenly. If you feel the urge to smoke, use one or even two sprays if a single spray does not help within a few minutes.
- Follow the instructions to ensure you are using Niconex correctly.
Method of use
How to prime the dispenser:
- When using Niconex for the first time, you must first prime the spray pump. Hold the spray pump at a safe distance from yourself or any other adults, children or pets nearby. Press the top of the pump three times with your index finger until a fine mist is released.
- If you do not use the spray for 2 days, you must repeat this priming process.
How to use the dispenser:
- Once you have prepared the dispenser for use, aim the spray nozzle as close as possible to your open mouth.
- Press the top of the dispenser to release a spray into your mouth. Take care not to wet your lips.
- Position the spray tube between your cheek and the lower gum line/teeth to aim at the inside of your cheek and avoid wetting your lips.
Do not breathe in whilst spraying to prevent the spray from entering your throat. For best results, do not swallow for a few seconds after spraying. Take care not to spray into your eyes when using the mouth spray. If you get spray in your eyes, rinse them thoroughly with water. Do not eat or drink whilst using the spray.
