Microlax® Micro-enema is an over-the-counter medicine containing the active ingredients: sodium citrate, sodium dodecyl (sulphatoacetate), and sorbitol. It is used to treat constipation in the rectum in adults and children, etc.

In cases of constipation, bowel contents accumulate in the rectum and much of the water is drawn out. The stools become hard and dry. However, even hard stools still contain a relatively large amount of water. This is where Microlax comes into play. The water bound within the hardened stool is released, causing the thickened stool to soften, so that the bowel can be emptied easily and without discomfort. 

Microlax acts directly on the stools and not on the bowel wall, meaning there is no irritation of the bowel lining. It is not absorbed through the bowel lining. Any excess is excreted with the stools, meaning there are no delayed bowel movements. 

Gentle bowel movement occurs within 5 to 20 minutes. 

Microlax is used:

• for constipation in the rectal region in adults and children, such as that caused by -chronically suppressed urge to defecate (travelling, work),certain medical conditions, e.g. multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease,an unbalanced diet (low-fibre diet, dehydration),mental health conditions, stress, depression, etc.Medication, e.g. iron supplements, etc.
• to facilitate bowel movements following surgery, during pregnancy and in obstetrics, in elderly or bedridden patients, in high-risk patients and in children 
• for bowel preparation prior to rectal endoscopy

Directions for use

Microlax is a ready-to-use, single-use enema for rectal administration:

1. Hold the tube by the lower neck and twist the cap off gently. 
2. To make it easier to insert the tube neck, squeeze out a drop to moisten the tip and spread the liquid. 
3. In adults, the tube neck should be inserted fully into the rectum. 
4. Squeeze the tube firmly to empty the contents into the rectum. 
5. To prevent the solution from flowing back into the tube, the tube must remain squeezed until it has been completely removed from the rectum. 

Microlax can be administered in whatever position is most comfortable for the patient; it is not necessary to lie down during the 5-minute retention period, which should be observed. Adults, adolescents and children over 3 years of age should use one tube as required. In stubborn cases, a second tube may be necessary.

Ingredients

• What Microlax contains – The active ingredients are: sodium citrate, sodium dodecyl (sulfoacetate) and sorbitol. One 5 ml tube contains 450 mg of sodium citrate, 45 mg of sodium dodecyl (sulphatoacetate) and 3125 mg of sorbitol.
• The other ingredients are: glycerol, sorbic acid and purified water.
