Lutamax 20 mg capsules are adietary food for special medical purposes. They have been specially developed for dietary management of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) to protect the retina.

AMD is a slowly progressive condition in which the photoreceptor cells of the retina gradually lose their function, which in the worst-case scenario can lead to blindness. The cause of the condition is thought to be lifelong, continuous damage to the photoreceptor cells caused by the energy of sunlight and the associated oxidative damage. Eventually, the photoreceptor cells can no longer withstand this strain and begin, first, to lose their functionality and, ultimately, to die off.

Lutamax® contains the plant-based substance lutein, which protects the photoreceptors from the brief bursts of high-energy blue sunlight, as it filters out precisely this part of the light spectrum very effectively. Lutein thus acts like a pair of natural sunglasses. Lutein is found in many yellow and green vegetables. In Europe, however, we consume far too little lutein through our diet on average, so taking a supplement to protect the eyes is both sensible and necessary.

A tip: It is not only glaring sunlight, but also short-wavelength blue light – such as that emitted by computer or smartphone screens – that contains a great deal of energy and can damage the eyes if you are exposed to it for too long. You should therefore try to avoid excessive exposure of your eyes to sunlight, as well as spending very long periods working in front of screens, in order to protect your eyes.

A special, highly concentrated lutein extract, produced exclusively for Pharmaselect, is used in the manufacture of Lutamax®. This enables us to achieve a high product quality whilst keeping the capsules as small as possible so that they are easy to swallow.

Taking Lutamax® is recommended in the early stages of AMD. If you are already in the intermediate or later stages of the condition, we would recommend using Lutamax® AREDS instead. The decision as to which product is right for you should be made by your treating ophthalmologist.

Directions for use

It is recommended to take 1 Lutamax 20 mg capsule daily for the first 6 months. This quickly replenishes the body’s own lutein stores and promotes the rapid uptake of lutein into the eyes.
For long-term use, take one 10 mg Lutamax capsule daily. This will help you maintain your lutein levels at the desired higher level.
Important note: It is important to take Lutamax daily and continuously. If you stop taking lutein, the levels in the retina will drop significantly again within a few weeks. The protective effect of lutein on the eye can only be realised with long-term use.
