Lutamax DUO 10 mg capsules , 30 ST

Product information "Lutamax DUO 10 mg capsules "
For use in the early stages of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Double protection with plant-based lutein and omega-3 fatty acids.

LUTAMAX DUO capsules were specially developed as a dietary supplement to protect the retina in age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Taking them is recommended in all phases of AMD, including the late phases.

LUTAMAX DUO contains the essential nutrients lutein, zeaxanthin and the omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA. All these substances are of natural origin and are used in particular purity in the production of LUTAMAX DUO.

Lutein and zeaxanthin are natural protective factors and are stored in the visual cells of the retina. There they filter the particularly high-energy blue light and thus protect the visual cells from light damage. Lutein therefore acts as "natural sunglasses" for the eye. The omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA are necessary for the proper functioning of the photoreceptors and increase the eye's resistance to damaging influences.

Age-related macular degeneration

  • Age-related macular degeneration, or AMD, is the most common eye disease in western industrialised countries and is often associated with severe vision loss. In AMD, the macula lutea - the area of sharpest vision - gradually becomes more and more impaired. The photoreceptors are destroyed and the disease can eventually lead to blindness. In Austria alone, over 100,000 people currently suffer from AMD.
  • The exact causes for the development of AMD are still not clearly understood. Oxidative processes, deposits of waste products in the retina ("drusen") and metabolic disorders are probably responsible for the development of AMD.
  • If AMD has been diagnosed, it makes sense to protect the eyes from damaging influences and provide them with the best possible supply of protective substances. The special composition of LUTAMAX DUO with lutein and omega-3 fatty acids serves this purpose.

Mode of action of lutein and zeaxanthin

Lutein and zeaxanthin are plant substances that the body cannot produce itself. Zeaxanthin is another form (= isoform) of lutein and is naturally present in all fruits and vegetables that contain lutein. In LUTAMAX
DUO contains a highly pure Tagetes erecta extract (marigold extract) with a natural mixture of lutein and approx. 5-10% zeaxanthin.

Lutein and zeaxanthin have a dual protective function for the retina:

  1. Both substances have the property of filtering the high-energy blue portion of the light spectrum particularly efficiently. As a result, this dangerous light component only reaches the visual cells at a reduced intensity and the risk of light-induced damage to the sensitive photoreceptors is minimised.
  2. As powerful antioxidants that are specifically stored in the retina by the human body, lutein and zeaxanthin neutralise the "free radicals" formed by UV rays.

Lutein and zeaxanthin also have another positive effect. They reduce the light scattering ("chromatic aberration") of the light entering the eye. This positive effect means that objects can be seen more clearly.

But even in patients in whom lutein does not lead to a noticeable improvement in visual acuity, the incorporation of lutein into the retina leads to better protection against dangerous blue light. For this reason, lutein should be taken continuously in all phases of the disease, including the late stages of AMD.

Intake of lutein and zeaxanthin

  • The human organism relies on ingesting the two valuable protective substances lutein and zeaxanthin through food. Unfortunately, however, in Europe we only absorb small amounts of lutein and zeaxanthin (on average 2 mg daily) through our normal diet.
  • Dosing studies have shown that at least 10mg of lutein per day is required to significantly increase lutein levels in the retina. The response rate (number of responders) can be further increased with an initial dosage of 20mg lutein daily, so that it seems advisable to take 20mg lutein daily for the first 3-6 months. This replenishes the body's own lutein stores and promotes the incorporation of lutein into the eyes.
  • LUTAMAX DUO is therefore available in both concentrations, 20mg and 10mg. The supplementary balanced diet of LUTAMAX DUO ensures a targeted and controlled supply of high-purity lutein and zeaxanthin in the recommended dosage.

Mode of action and dosage of omega-3 fatty acids

  • Scientific studies have shown that omega-3 fatty acids can significantly reduce the risk of developing AMD. Recent studies also show that DHA and EPA can apparently also drastically reduce the risk of late forms of AMD if omega-3 fatty acids are consumed regularly. This is particularly important, as the late forms of AMD in particular lead to a significant and irreversible loss of vision.
  • We now know that the two omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA are important components for the correct functioning of the visual receptors. There is also clear evidence that omega-3 fatty acids suppress the dreaded formation of new blood vessels in the retina and thus reduce the risk of so-called "wet AMD". In this form of AMD, haemorrhages occur in the retina, leading to rapid and significant loss of vision within a few days.
  • In Central Europe, the average intake of omega-3 fatty acids is around 150-200mg per day. However, a total daily intake of around 500mg per day is recommended. The supplementary balanced diet with LUTAMAX DUO therefore covers the average additional daily requirement of 330mg. LUTAMAX DUO 20mg contains slightly higher amounts of omega-3 fatty acids (430mg) to replenish omega-3 fatty acid stores in the first few months.
  • A total intake of more than 600mg of omega-3 fatty acids per day may have an anti-arrhythmic and pro-coagulant effect and should therefore not be taken without monitoring by a cardiologist. However, LUTAMAX DUO is dosed in such a way that the recommended intake of omega-3 fatty acids can be optimally fulfilled without cardiac effects.

How to use
  • 1 capsule of Lutamax DUO 10 mg per day is recommended for continuous intake.
  • It is recommended to take 1 capsule of Lutamax DUO 20 mg daily for the first 6 months.
  • Important note: It is important to take Lutamax® DUO continuously every day. If you stop taking lutein and omega-3 fatty acids, the values in the retina will drop again significantly within a few weeks. The protective effect of these substances on the eye can only be realised if they are taken continuously.
