1. What is Leukichtan® and what is it used for?
Leukichtan® is an ointment containing an active ingredient from the group of sulphonated shale oils. It has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties and stimulates blood circulation. Cod liver oil promotes wound healing.
Leukichtan® is used to treat superficial inflammatory skin conditions and older, non-weeping skin ulcers.
2. What should you bear in mind before using Leukichtan®?
Leukichtan® ointment must not be used
if you are hypersensitive to sulphonated shale oils, such as ammonium bituminosulphonate and/or sodium bituminosulphonate, or to any of the other ingredients.
Particular caution is required when using Leukichtan®
Do not apply to the eyes.
If symptoms persist or if the expected improvement does not occur, seek medical advice as soon as possible.
When using Leukichtan® with other medicines
Please inform a doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, even if they are over-the-counter medicines.
The additional use of ointments or creams may impair the effect of Leukichtan®.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
There are insufficient data available on the use of Leukichtan® ointment during pregnancy or whilst breastfeeding.
A doctor will decide on its use during pregnancy or whilst breastfeeding.
Driving and operating machinery
Leukichtan® ointment has no effect on your ability to drive or use machinery.
Important information about certain other ingredients in Leukichtan®
Lanolin may cause localised skin irritation (e.g. contact dermatitis).
3. How should Leukichtan® be used?
Always use Leukichtan® exactly as described in this leaflet. Please ask a doctor or pharmacist if you are not entirely sure.
Unless otherwise prescribed, apply a layer of Leukichtan® about as thick as the back of a knife to a suitably large piece of clean gauze. The gauze is then placed over the area of skin to be treated and secured with a plaster or a dressing. Any residue of the ointment can be removed with an oily cloth or soap and water.
The dressing should be changed every other day.
If you have used more Leukichtan® than you should have
If skin irritation occurs, stop using the product and wash off any remaining ointment. Please consult a doctor in this case.
If you forget to use Leukichtan®
If you miss a single dose, do not apply a double dose of Leukichtan® the next time; simply resume treatment with the usual dose.
If you stop using Leukichtan®
Please discuss the next steps with a doctor, as the success of the treatment may be compromised.

4. What side effects are possible?
Like all medicines, Leukichtan® can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Please tell a doctor or pharmacist if any of the listed side effects significantly affect you or if you notice any side effects not listed in this leaflet.
Immune system disorders
Very rare (fewer than 1 in 10,000 people treated): contact allergy. In such cases, consult a doctor.
Skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders
In rare cases (1 to 10 in 10,000 people treated), skin reactions may occur (itching, burning, marked redness).
5. How should Leukichtan® be stored?
Do not store above 25°C.
Keep this medicine out of the reach of children.
Once opened, the medicine can be used for 6 months, but not beyond the expiry date
. Do not use the medicine after the expiry date stated on the pack under ‘Use by’.
