1 What is Leukichtan® and what is it used for?
Leukichtan® is an ointment with an active ingredient from the group of sulphonated shale oils. It has an anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and circulation-enhancing effect. Cod liver oil promotes wound healing.
Leukichtan® is used for superficial inflammatory skin diseases and older, non-weeping skin ulcers.
2 What do you need to know before using Leukichtan®?
Leukichtan® - Ointment must not be used
if you are hypersensitive to sulphonated shale oils such as ammonium bituminosulphonate and/or sodium bituminosulphonate or any of the other ingredients.
Special care is required when using Leukichtan®
Do not use on the eye.
If the symptoms persist or if the expected results are not achieved, seek medical advice as soon as possible.
When using Leukichtan® with other medicines
Please inform a doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, even if they are non-prescription medicines.
The additional use of ointments or creams can impair the effect of Leukichtan®.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
There are insufficient data available for the use of Leukichtan® Ointment during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding should be decided by a doctor.
Roadworthiness and the operation of machinery
Leukichtan® - Ointment has no influence on the ability to drive and use machines.
Important information about certain other ingredients of Leukichtan®
Lanolin may cause localised skin irritation (e.g. contact dermatitis).
3 How should Leukichtan® be used?
Always use Leukichtan® exactly as instructed in this leaflet. Please consult a doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure.
Unless otherwise prescribed, apply Leukichtan® to the back of a knife on a suitably sized piece of clean gauze. The gauze is then placed on the area of skin to be treated and secured with a plaster or bandage. Ointment residue can be removed with an oily cloth or soap and water.
The dressing should be changed every other day.
If you have applied a larger amount of Leukichtan® than you should
If skin irritation occurs, stop using the product and wash off any ointment residue. In this case, please consult a doctor.
If you have forgotten to use Leukichtan®
If you have forgotten to apply a single dose, please do not apply twice the amount of Leukichtan® for the next treatment, but resume treatment with the intended dose.
If you discontinue the use of Leukichtan®
Please discuss the further course of action with a doctor, as the success of the treatment is jeopardised.
If you have any further questions about the use of Leukichtan®, please ask a doctor or pharmacist.
4 What side effects are possible?
Like all medicines, Leukichtan® can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Please inform a doctor or pharmacist if any of the side effects listed significantly affect you or if you notice any side effects not listed in this leaflet.
Diseases of the immune system
Very rare (less than 1 treated person in 10,000): Contact allergy. In such cases, consult a doctor.
Diseases of the skin and subcutaneous tissue
In rare cases (1 to 10 people in 10,000 treated), intolerance reactions of the skin may occur (itching, burning, increased redness).
5 How should Leukichtan® be stored?
Do not store above 25°C.
Keep the medicine out of the reach of children.
After opening, the medicine can be used for 6 months, but not beyond the expiry date.
