Wild garlic (Allium ursinum) is also known colloquially as wild garlic, garlic spinach or witch's onion. It is related to chives, onions and garlic and also has a very similar flavour. In Europe and parts of Asia, it is mainly found in forests and is collected in spring as a prized wild vegetable. Wild garlic often forms very large stands - in certain forests the plant is so common that in spring the entire forest floor is covered in wild garlic leaves. However, for wild garlic to grow so vigorously, it needs optimal soil and light conditions. It generally prefers shady, moist and humus-rich locations such as deciduous forests.
The leaves dry out again just two to three months after sprouting. By then, seed development must be complete and all nutrients must be stored in the surviving bulb. Wild garlic is particularly rich in the sulphur compound allicin. Wild garlic also contains essential oils, iron, potassium, calcium, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, selenium and vitamin C.
We carefully collect the wild garlic for our full tinctures by hand, exclusively outdoors. The alcoholic extract extracts both water- and fat-soluble ingredients from the plant, so that all the active ingredients of wild garlic are available in the tincture. To guarantee the best quality, we do not use any chemicals or additives in the manufacture of our wild garlic products.
