Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is a plant species from the genus Withania and is also commonly known as sleeping berry, winter cherry or Indian ginseng. It is a perennial, herbaceous plant with medium to heavily branched plant hairs, also known as trichomes, which grow to a height of 30 - 160 cm and have branched and hairy shoots. The leaves of the ashwagandha, like the shoot axis itself, are also heavily hairy on the underside and on the upper side along the midrib.

The inflorescences consist of groups of four to six flowers and sit almost directly on the very short flower stalk. The bell-shaped calyx of the Ashwagandha is covered with small spikes and the pistil protrudes far beyond the corolla. When the fruit ripens, the calyx enlarges many times over and becomes translucent brown in colour. Although the ashwagandha berry produces shiny berries with a scarlet colour, the valuable ingredients are mainly extracted from the roots. Ashwagandha is often compared to Asian ginseng. It is found throughout Africa, the Mediterranean region and in many areas of Asia and is an integral part of Ayurveda.

Ashwagandha is one of the herbs that bestselling author Anthony William particularly emphasises. As he rejects the use of alcohol, the tinctures he recommends are made with vegetable glycerine as an extracting agent. We have deliberately decided against glycerine from monocultures such as rapeseed, maize or palm oil. That is why we use vegetable glycerine from organic linseed for our alcohol-free tinctures.

Our alcohol-free ashwagandha liquid is made with ashwagandha from controlled organic cultivation. Before bottling, it is regularly shaken by hand and left to mature for at least three months.
