Hydrosorb® Gel is a clear, viscous, sterile gel containing a modified starch polymer, glycerine, preservatives and water. Hydrosorb® Gel maintains a moist wound healing environment that favours healing.
Depending on wound conditions, Hydrosorb Gel rehydrates dry necrotic tissue to promote debridement of dry wounds or absorbs wound mucus and exudate if a small amount of exudate is present. Hydrosorb Gel can be washed off by flushing the wound with sterile saline, resulting in little or no trauma to the wound and therefore better wound healing and painless replacement of Hydrosorb Gel.
Intended use
Hydrosorb Gel can be used as a non-invasive wound product for most types of ulcers, pressure ulcers and other poorly exuding, sloughing or necrotic wounds over a prolonged period of time.
Target group
People with the following wounds:
- Pressure ulcers
- Venous leg ulcers
- Diabetic foot ulcers
- First and second degree burns
Indications
Hydrosorb Gel is indicated for the treatment of dry, non-exuding wounds and slightly exuding injuries to the upper two layers of skin, such as
- Pressure ulcers
- Venous leg ulcers
- Diabetic foot ulcers
- First and second degree burns
- Incontinence-related dermatitis
Clinical benefits
In the early stages of treatment with the Hydrosorb Gel wound product, it may initially appear as if the wound is getting bigger. This is normal and is due to the wound debris being removed from the edges of the wound. This clears the way for healing.
When treating dry and slightly exuding wounds, Hydrosorb Gel makes the overlying environment more favourable for healing. However, in cases where treatment with Hydrosorb Gel alone makes little or no progress, appropriate treatment of the underlying condition is also required. Therefore, if there is no improvement after 4 to 6 weeks of treatment with Hydrosorb Gel, the original diagnosis and overall therapy should be reassessed by a healthcare professional in accordance with recognised wound care practice

How to use
Application of Hydrosorb Gel: Remove the cap and expose the applicator nozzle. Then squeeze the tube and apply Hydrosorb Gel directly to the wound. The time interval between dressing changes depends entirely on the condition of the wound. For exuding wounds, a daily change may be required at the start of treatment, but this can be reduced to every 2 to 3 days for dry wounds after assessment by a suitably qualified healthcare professional.
Preparation:
- Visually inspect the tube for damage before opening.
- Clean the wound with sterile saline or other suitable sterile cleansing solution using sterile swabs.
- Dry the skin around the wound
Application of Hydrosorb Gel:
- In accordance with local guidelines and best practice for handling sterile wound products, remove a sterile tube of Hydrosorb Gel from the packaging. Inspect the tube to ensure that it is not damaged or leaking.
- Select the appropriate amount of Hydrosorb Gel to completely cover the wound surface and open the applicator opening snap cap.
- Wipe the opening tip with a proprietary alcohol wipe.
- Hold the opening so that it does not touch the wound surface, gently squeeze the tube and apply the Hydrosorb gel to the entire wound, at least 5 mm thick.
- Cover the wound with a suitable secondary dressing. Compression therapy can be used in conjunction with Hydrosorb Gel treatment if prescribed by a doctor.
- The tubes of Hydrosorb Gel are for single use only. Discard the tube of unused Hydrosorb Gel after the first use.
- To minimise the risk of potential infection hazards or environmental contamination, the disposable components of Hydrosorb Gel should be disposed of in accordance with local infection prevention laws, rules, regulations and standards.
Dressing changes:
Change the dressing if it is soiled or soaked or if exudate/drainage is visible. Otherwise, change the dressing according to the facility's established protocol.
- Carefully remove the Hydrosorb gel by rinsing with an appropriate sterile solution.
- Follow the procedure "Application of Hydrosorb Gel" to apply a new dressing.
