- Lower respiratory tract conditions associated with thickened mucus that require a gentle increase in mucus clearance
- Acute bronchitis
- Acute bronchiolitis
- Cystic fibrosis
- Recommendation: Initial use should be under medical supervision, particularly in patients with respiratory hypersensitivity and in children.
- Many lower respiratory tract conditions are associated with the thickening of secretions in the airways. This disrupts the airways’ self-cleansing function, also known as mucociliary clearance. Furthermore, the thick mucus provides an ideal breeding ground for bacteria, which can then colonise the airways and cause inflammation of the mucous membranes.
- It is therefore important for people with respiratory conditions to thin the thick mucus and restore the airways’ self-cleansing function. Activating the so-called ciliated cells in the mucous membrane also facilitates the removal of the thinned secretions.
- The bicarbonate contained in Emser® Inhalation Solution is of particular importance, especially for cystic fibrosis patients. This is present in high concentrations in natural Emser salt. As their bodies lack bicarbonate due to their condition, the secretions in the lungs become thick and solid. Administered bicarbonate liquefies the thick mucus and improves its clearance from the lungs. The flow properties are demonstrably improved.
- Emser® Hypertonic Inhalation Solution liquefies thick mucus in the lower airways by physical means. It also improves the self-cleansing function of the airway mucosa. The liquefied mucus can then be cleared more easily, gently clearing the airways.
- Emser Hypertonic 4% Inhalation Solution is suitable as a carrier solution for the inhalation of medicines that dilate the bronchi. These include, for example, beta-sympathomimetics and anticholinergics. It is not compatible with medicines containing ambroxol or bromhexine. Please refer to the instructions for use for further details.
- Chronic lower respiratory tract diseases can present with a wide variety of symptoms. People with chronic bronchitis, asthma or COPD, for example, suffer from increased mucus production and an associated narrowing of the airways. In contrast, cystic fibrosis is a metabolic disorder. It leads to a change in the composition of bronchial secretions, as the water-salt balance is disrupted by a genetic defect.
- Nevertheless, the consequences of these conditions are very similar: mucus accumulates in the bronchi and patients find it difficult to cough it up. This then provides an ideal breeding ground for bacteria, leading to frequent infections and associated inflammation of the lower respiratory tract.

Ingredients
- Hypertonic 4% inhalation solution: 100 ml of solution contains 3.95 g of natural Emser salt and purified water.
- Natural Emser salt consists of more than 30 minerals and trace elements that characterise the salt.
- In addition to sodium and chloride ions, it contains minerals such as potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, fluoride and sulphate.
- Hydrogen carbonate ions make up the largest proportion, which is why a solution of natural Emser salt is slightly alkaline (pH 8–10).
