Potassium is needed to convert sugar into glycogen in the liver and muscle cells. Together with sodium, potassium is responsible for the normal water and electrolyte balance (salt balance) of the body. It is important for the transmission of stimuli in muscles and nerve cells and contributes to the maintenance of normal blood pressure and protein metabolism.
