MELATONIN

• Melatonin is a natural, endogenous substance that is involved in the regulation of the sleep-wake rhythm. The production of melatonin in the pineal gland of the brain is regulated by the changing light conditions during the course of the day. If light falls on the retina of the eye, this inhibits melatonin production. In the dark, melatonin production is stimulated and melatonin concentrations increase tenfold at night. Melatonin is also an antioxidant and helps to shorten the time it takes to fall asleep. This positive effect occurs when 1 mg of melatonin is taken shortly before going to bed.

• Hops are known for their gentle but proven calming effect on the central nervous system. Hops have been used since time immemorial to calm people down and help them fall asleep. It is still used today for relaxation, usually in combination with other sleep-promoting herbs such as lemon balm.

• Lemon balm has been used since the Middle Ages to reduce stress and anxiety. The calming effect of lemon balm has been confirmed by human studies. Research has also shown that lemon balm has a positive effect on improving mood.

• L-tryptophan is an essential amino acid and is a precursor of serotonin and the "sleep hormone" melatonin. It increases serotonin levels in the brain without negatively affecting mental performance.
