Hibiscus (Flos Hibisci)
- Hibiscus (also known as red mallow or karkade) is an annual plant that grows up to 5 metres high. The calyxes and outer calyxes are harvested and dried during the fruiting season.
- Effect: Hibiscus flowers have a typical pleasantly sour taste; the drinks prepared from them are thirst-quenching and have an intense red colour. No specific medicinal effect is known; in folk medicine, red mallow is used to treat colds and circulatory problems and as a mild laxative.
Peppermint (Folium Menthae piperita)
- Peppermint is a spontaneous cross between two species of mint (M. spicata and M. aquatica). It is sterile, i.e. it cannot reproduce naturally. It was first discovered in England in 1696 in a field of spearmint and has been cultivated in the form of seedlings ever since. It grows up to 90 cm high and contains essential oil. The leaves have a characteristic odour when crushed.
- Effect: The main active ingredient in peppermint is essential oil, especially menthol. Peppermint leaves are used to treat colds and headaches and relieve cramp-like complaints in the biliary tract and gastrointestinal tract.
Red vine leaves (Folium Vitis viniferae)
- The vine is one of the oldest cultivated plants, known and cultivated by the Egyptians, Babylonians and Indians as early as 3,500 BC. The ancient Greeks and Romans also cultivated vines. Due to the different climatic zones and locations, countless grape varieties developed in Europe, which were further developed through breeding and according to which the vines and the wines produced from them are categorised. The vine is a liana that can reach a height of between 2 and 10 metres. The leaves are used medicinally
- Effect: French winegrowers used to collect large quantities of red vine leaves from the grape harvest and use them to make infusions and poultices. The infusions were bottled and taken regularly in small quantities. The pulp made from vine leaves was used for the local treatment of swollen, aching legs - with great success. The ingredients in red vine leaves (flavonoids, polyphenols, procyanidins, etc.), which have a decongestant, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effect, are responsible for this.
Liquorice (Radix Liquiritiae)
- Liquorice is a woody, perennial shrub that grows up to 2 metres high. It has an extensive root system with a taproot. The bluish to light purple butterfly flowers are arranged in spike-like, upright inflorescences. The dried secondary roots collected in late autumn to spring are used medicinally.
- Effect: The glycyrrhizin contained in liquorice root has a cough-reducing, anti-inflammatory and expectorant effect. It also inhibits the growth of bacteria, fungi and viruses, which means that liquorice root can also be used to treat coughs and inflammation in the mouth and throat.
