Dequonal is a ready-to-use medicine for disinfecting (antiseptic) the mouth and throat and does not need to be diluted. The uncoloured, water-clear solution is used in the oral cavity for gargling, rinsing or as a spray. Children and elderly or seriously ill patients who are unable to gargle can be treated with the spray solution. Dequonal contains dequalinium chloride and benzalkonium chloride as active ingredients.

Can a mouthwash help against coronaviruses? Experts from various research institutions across Germany investigated this question - and found the answer. The results, which were published in the internationally renowned Journal of Infectious Diseases, show that DEQUONAL® fights coronaviruses. Infectivity was greatly reduced in laboratory tests after the viruses were treated with the oral therapeutic.^1,3

In their experiments, the scientists isolated and multiplied coronaviruses from infected patients. The viruses were treated with antiseptic mouthwash for thirty seconds in a liquid medium that resembled human respiratory secretions. The result was compared with samples without mouthwash - and it turned out that DEQUONAL® even reduced the infectivity of coronaviruses to below the experimental detection limit.¹

Active ingredients

Benzalkonium chloride is not only effective against bacteria and fungi, but also inactivates the so-called "enveloped" viruses found in the mouth and throat (e.g. herpes virus).
Dequalinium chloride increases the effect against bacteria and especially against fungi due to its long-lasting effect. By combining the two active ingredients, mixed infections in the mouth and throat can be treated.

Indications

Dequonal is used for the temporary supportive treatment of inflammation and infectious diseases in the mouth and throat, inflammation of the gums (gingivitis), inflammation of the oral mucosa (stomatitis) and Candida fungal infections (thrush). Dequonal reduces inflammation and helps to relieve pain.

Dequonal is also used temporarily to treat bad breath caused by germs in the mouth.

How to use

Dequonal gargle solution

Gargle 2 - 4 times a day after meals with about a tablespoonful of Dequonal for about 20 - 30 seconds or longer in the case of throat inflammation , rinse forthe same length of timein the case of diseases in the oral cavity .

Dequonal solution for spraying

Spray the Dequonal solution into the oral cavityevery two hours - or more frequently in severe cases - with 3-5 sprays .
You should spray the affected areas in the oral cavity while holding your breath. To do this, press the spray valve down 3-5 times as far as it will go (pump)!
Dequonal should not be used long-term without medical or dental advice. If the symptoms are accompanied by fever or if the symptoms do not subside considerably after 3 days at the latest , a doctor should be consulted. Theremay be an inflammation requiring treatment , which can have serious consequences for the heart and kidneys.

Ingredients

The active ingredients are: Dequalinium chloride and benzalkonium chloride. 100 g solution for use in the oral cavity contains 0.015 g dequalinium chloride and 0.035 g benzalkonium chloride.

The other ingredients are: Flavouring oil (mint oil, star anise oil, bitter fennel oil, levomenthol, peppermint oil), ethanol 96 %, glycerol, macrogol glycerol hydroxystearate, purified water.
