- The plant, bound to its location, has no way of defending itself against enemies and even needs help from the animal kingdom to reproduce. To compensate for these disadvantages, plants produce so-called "secondary plant substances". These are not used for growth, but are intended to attract pollinators or provide targeted protection against bacteria, viruses, UV radiation, fungal attack and predators.
- Vitamin C is also one of these plant protective substances. Some fruits that are exposed to particularly harsh environmental conditions, such as rose hips or acerola cherries, produce particularly high amounts of natural vitamin C and so-called flavonoids. One of the tasks of these flavonoids is to naturally regenerate "used" vitamin C and thus support its effectiveness.
- When we hear vitamin C, the first thing we think of is strengthening the body's defences. But vitamin C has many more functions in the body: it increases iron absorption and thus supports haematopoiesis. Vitamin C also promotes collagen formation in the skin, bones, teeth, gums, blood vessels and cartilage. Vitamin C also supports energy metabolism. Ultimately, however, vitamin C is also a key antioxidant. As such, in combination with numerous vital plant substances, it protects our body structures from an excess of biological "sparks", so-called radicals and peroxides.
- Cell protection: Diseases, stress, smoking or increased physical activity cause the number of free radicals in the body to skyrocket. This is known as "oxidative stress". To "neutralise" these free radicals, we need a variety of antioxidants. Plant-based vitamin C from acerola and rosehip fruits (Rosa canina) helps to protect cells from oxidative stress. As confirmed by modern plant research, plant polyphenols, bioflavonoids, quercetin, echinacea and EGCG from green tea (Camellia sinensis), sage (Salvia officinalis) and Citrus aurantium also help to protect cells from oxidative stress.
- Resistance: The human body has several well-coordinated systems to ward off external pathogens. If we are exposed to an increased number of germs, these systems are put to the test. Rosehips (Rosa canina), sage (Salvia officinalis), green tea (Camellia sinensis), quercetin and plant-based vitamin C support the body's natural defence function.
- Japanese honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica) and propolis are also rich in polyphenols and bioflavonoids.
