- As a component of selenoproteins, selenium is an important part of the protective mechanisms in the body and helps to protect cells from oxidative stress. The majority of selenoproteins are antioxidants. As part of enzymes, selenium protects the body's cells from attacks by so-called "free radicals". If the supply of selenium is insufficient, the antioxidant function of selenoproteins can be severely restricted.
- Oxidative stress plays an important role during pregnancy . At the beginning, the oxygen content in the placenta is very low in order to support the child's development and supply.
