Reduced glutathione: effect and function

Glutathione is a tripeptide, which means it consists of three amino acids: L-cysteine, L-glutamic acid and L-glycine. If your body is sufficiently supplied with these amino acids, it can also produce glutathione itself. You can find glutathione throughout your body, but it is most abundant in the liver. For good reason, because glutathione supports your liver in its function. Glutathione also controls the white blood cells and protects your body from free radicals as an antioxidant. As a helper in cell division, it can be particularly effective in people over the age of 40, as the body's own production naturally decreases from this age.

Difference between glutathione and reduced glutathione

Glutathione occurs in your body as oxidised and reduced glutathione in a ratio of 1:500, so they are simply two different forms (or more precisely two chemical states) of the same tripeptide. Due to various external influences such as stress, the ratio of the two can become unbalanced and the oxidised form gains the upper hand. To prevent this, it makes sense to supply reduced glutathione from the outside via the diet or glutathione capsules. Reduced glutathione is found naturally in green vegetables such as spinach and broccoli as well as in watermelons and oranges. However, the glutathione content in foods is usually very low due to processing and preservation.
