Coenzyme Q10, also known as CoQ10, is a fat-soluble vitaminoid with structural similarities to vitamins E and K. Chemically speaking, it is an ubiquinone whose side chain consists of ten isoprene units - hence the name "Q10". The name "ubiquinone" is derived from the Latin "ubique", which means "everywhere", as CoQ10 is found in all body cells.

Coenzyme Q10 is one of the vitamin-like substances that the human body can produce itself. It utilises building blocks such as tyrosine and methionine as well as important co-factors such as folic acid and vitamin B12. CoQ10 is also absorbed through food - mainly from meat, fish, nuts and certain vegetable oils. However, the daily contribution from food is usually only around 3-6 mg.

Coenzyme Q10: versatile and irreplaceable

CoQ10 is involved in numerous biochemical processes in the body. It is essential for the organism and cannot be replaced by other molecules. In certain life situations, the requirement may increase or the body's own production may be limited, which is why a conscious supplement may be useful. CoQ10 is present in its natural form as ubiquinone, which can be converted into ubiquinol in the body. This ability makes coenzyme Q10 a versatile substance within the cells.
