Coenzyme Q10 (ubiquinone)
Coenzyme Q10 is also known as a vitaminoid (vitamin-like substance) and has fat-soluble properties. In food, Q10 is mainly found in animal foods and less in plant foods. Coenzyme Q10 is a substance produced naturally in the body and is mainly found in cells that have an increased energy requirement. These include the heart muscles, lungs and liver as well as the skeletal muscles. On a cellular level, coenzyme Q10 is part of an enzyme complex and is one of the key factors in the mitochondria (power stations) of our cells and is therefore significantly involved in energy production. A decrease in the body's own production of Q10 can be observed from the age of around 30 and should be compensated for by a balanced and healthy diet.
