- The adhesive properties of tamarind seeds on the mucous membrane (mucoadhesiveness) help to protect the mucous membranes of the gastrointestinal tract from the throat (pharynx) to the stomach. The preparation adheres to the mucous membrane, forming a barrier there and thus alleviating the symptoms of reflux from the stomach into the oesophagus or lower throat (gastro-oesophageal or laryngopharyngeal reflux).
- Alginate is a polysaccharide isolated from certain algae; this fibre quickly forms a viscous and light gel when it reaches the stomach, covering and protecting the gastric mucosa. The viscous alginate gel also makes it more difficult for the contents of the stomach to rise, which significantly reduces the number of reflux episodes.
- The carbonate and bicarbonate compound neutralises stomach acid. In addition, the carbon dioxide bubbles produced during the reaction are bound by the alginate gel, creating a foam that floats on the surface of the gastric juice. In the case of reflux, the foam that then enters the oesophagus consists mainly of alginate, which physically protects the mucous membrane from damage caused by contact with acids and digestive enzymes. The foam remains in the stomach until gastric digestion is complete and it enters the small intestine with the remaining stomach contents. In addition, the mucoadhesive properties of tamarind seeds help to protect the gastric mucosa.
Dosage form
Intended use
- Adults and adolescents (12-18 years): The recommended dosage is up to 6 chewable tablets per day, to be taken for at least two weeks until the symptoms subside, with a maximum of two chewable tablets immediately after the two main meals and a maximum of 2 chewable tablets before bedtime.
- Children (6-12 years): Half dose.
