- Melatonin: Lightness and darkness have a significant influence on our body's circadian rhythm. In the evening, when it gets dark, our body produces melatonin, a hormone that makes us tired and sleepy. The so-called pineal gland - a small gland in the centre of the brain that is regulated by signals from the retina - converts tryptophan into melatonin for this purpose. This initially leads to an increase in melatonin levels until around 2-4 a.m., which then fall again in the second half of the night. This controls our sleep-wake rhythm. A process that is often thrown out of sync by our modern lives. In addition, the body's own melatonin production decreases with increasing age. A targeted supply of the natural sleep hormone can help the body to fall asleep more easily*.
- Tryptophan: L-tryptophan is one of the essential amino acids that the body cannot produce itself. Sufficient intake through food is therefore essential. L-tryptophan is mainly found in foods containing protein. It has a variety of functions in the body. For example, tryptophan also plays a role in the production of melatonin, as it is the precursor of the hormone serotonin, which in turn is converted into melatonin.
- Vitamin B6: Vitamin B6 is a water-soluble vitamin and plays an important role in regulating hormone activity**. It is also involved in the conversion of tryptophan to the intermediate stage serotonin before melatonin can be formed from serotonin. Vitamin B6 is found in small amounts in almost all foods. Good animal sources are meat and fish; good plant sources are cabbage, green beans, lentils, lamb's lettuce, potatoes, wholemeal products, wheat germ and nuts as well as seeds, yeast, avocado and bananas.
