Hamamelis ist auch unter dem Namen „Zaubernuss“ bekannt. Dieser geht auf den englischen Namen „witch hazel“ („Hexenhasel“) zurück. Englische Siedler gaben der Pflanze diesen Namen, da sie einerseits der Haselnuss ähnelt, andererseits als Wünschelrute zur Wassersuche benutzt wurde.

Für die Anwendung von Hamamelis eignen sich die getrockneten Blätter sowie die getrocknete Rinde. Beide Pflanzenteile werden in ähnlicher Weise verwendet. Vor allem die enthaltenen Gerbstoffe reagieren oberflächlich mit den Hautproteinen, machen die Haut dadurch unempfindlicher für Reizungen und beruhigen vorhandene Irritationen. Dementsprechend wird Hamamelis äußerlich als Abkochung, Tinktur oder Destillat bei kleinflächigen Entzündungen der Haut, Hämorrhoiden, Krampfadern oder einfach als Rasierwasser angewendet.

Achtung: Hamamelis ist äußerlich verwendet gut verträglich, bei der innerlichen Anwendung kann es aufgrund der enthaltenen Gerbstoffe zu Verdauungsbeschwerden wie Übelkeit und Erbrechen kommen.
