Cat's claw: a medicinal plant with a long tradition
What is only slowly being discovered as a medicinal plant in this country has a centuries-long tradition in many parts of South and Latin America: cat's claw. The liana-like tropical plant bears the botanical name Uncaria tomentosa.
The Indians of the Peruvian rainforest have valued cat's claw for centuries and used it primarily as a variable medicinal plant. They have always used it to cure all kinds of health problems - both external and internal - and also used it as a preventative measure to protect against illness.

Where does its name come from?
In Peru, the cat's claw is called Una de Gato, which loosely translates as "cat's claw" or "cat's thorn". The cat's claw owes its name to the conspicuous, claw-like thorns with which it likes to climb up the trees of the rainforest - sometimes reaching heights of over 60 metres. It is found particularly in the moist, shady parts of the rainforest.

In contrast to many other plants, whose healing properties are found in the leaves, flowers or sometimes even the stems, the cat's claw hides its most valuable ingredient exceptionally well: the only parts that can be utilised are hidden in the inner root bark. The extract from the inside of this bark is ground into a fine, light brown powder - this powder is the basis for all further processing and dosage forms.

Cat's claw can be used in many different dosage forms. The possibilities range from ointments and soaked compresses to capsules. However, the most traditional form of use was created in South America itself: Freshly prepared tea.
Indians in particular utilised cat's claw tea to heal various ailments - both internal and external. The special thing about cat's claw tea is its special form of preparation: it is not just brewed, as is usually the case with plant teas, but is actually boiled. After boiling for around five minutes, the tea has to infuse for a further quarter of an hour to develop its full potential.

Alkaloids are natural, regulating plant substances that occur in nature in a remarkable variety; it is estimated that there are well over 10,000 different subspecies. Quinovinic acid glycosides are natural anti-inflammatory agents. Terpenoids are said to have a supportive, protective effect on the mitochondria - the human power cells. Flavonoids belong to the so-called secondary plant substances, i.e. plant substances that can only be produced in a certain type of cell. Flavonoids are used today in many common medicines, especially those intended to regulate the activity of the stomach, digestion and intestines.
