- Lutein and zeaxanthin act as ‘natural sunglasses’ and provide a form of protection, occurring predominantly in the macula (‘yellow spot’) of the human eye. They are also known as macular pigments and prevent high-energy UV radiation from penetrating as far as the macula. The macula is also referred to as the area of sharpest vision and is important, for example, for reading and recognising faces and contrasts.
- The essential omega-3 fatty acids (DHA and EPA) are naturally found in high concentrations in the retina of the eye. EPA is a precursor to the formation of DHA. DHA helps maintain normal vision.
- The trace element zinc also helps maintain normal vision.
- Furthermore, vitamins C and E, as well as zinc and copper , act as natural free radical scavengers in the body and help to protect cells from oxidative stress. Oxidative stress can lead to cell degeneration.
- Lutein, zeaxanthin, omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins must be supplied to the human body through the diet. However, due to differences in individual lifestyles, a balanced diet is not always possible. In such cases, a dietary supplement containing zinc and DHA can help maintain normal vision. A positive effect of DHA is observed with a daily intake of 250 mg of DHA. In such cases, a dietary supplement containing vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc and copper can also help to protect cells from oxidative stress.
