- Lutein and zeaxanthin occur as "natural sunglasses" and light protection factor predominantly in the macula ("yellow spot") of the human eye. They are also known as macular pigments and inhibit the penetration of high-energy UV radiation to the macula. The macula is also known as the area of sharpest vision and is important for reading and recognising faces and contrasts, for example.
- The essential omega-3 fatty acids (DHA and EPA) are naturally found in high concentrations in the retina of the eye. EPA is a starting material for the formation of DHA. DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal vision.
- The trace element zinc also contributes to the maintenance of normal vision.
- In addition, vitamins C and E as well as zinc and copper act as natural radical scavengers in the body and help to protect the cells from oxidative stress. Oxidative stress can lead to cell degeneration.
- Lutein, zeaxanthin, omega-3 fatty acids and vitamins must be supplied to the human organism with food. However, due to different individual lifestyles, a balanced diet is not always possible. In these cases, a dietary supplement with zinc and DHA can help to maintain normal vision. A positive effect of DHA is achieved with a daily intake of 250mg DHA. Supplementation with vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc and copper can also help to protect the cells from oxidative stress in these cases.
