For the supply of the essential amino acid L-tryptophan

L-tryptophan is a proteinogenic amino acid and therefore a component of proteins. L-tryptophan is involved in the formation of various proteins in the human body, e.g. in the muscles, in apolipoprotein B100 (part of the cholesterol transport molecule LDL) or in enzymes. L-tryptophan serves as a precursor for various messenger substances (neurotransmitters, hormones) such as serotonin and melatonin. It is also a provitamin for vitamin B3.

Together with L-phenylalanine, L-tyrosine and L-histidine, L-tryptophan is one of the aromatic amino acids. As the human organism is not able to produce this essential amino acid itself, it is dependent on a regular, sufficient supply from food.
