Product information "SinoPlaSan Folic Acid 400 µg MONO Drops"
SinoPlaSan Folic Acid 400 µg MONO Drops is a food supplement containing 400 µg of high-dose folic acid in drop form. The drops are vegan, gluten-free and lactose-free, and contain the highly bioavailable form of folic acid, L-methylfolate.
Folic acid (folate) is a B vitamin; it is water-soluble and also known as vitamin B9. The body cannot produce this particular vitamin itself and must therefore obtain it regularly through diet. Unfortunately, even a balanced diet often fails to meet the body’s folate requirements, as many people are unable to absorb or metabolise the folate they consume through food. Furthermore, many foods (particularly green foods such as vegetables and salad) contain hardly any folate these days, and this sensitive vitamin is often destroyed by heat and water before it can be absorbed from food.
This creates a need for dietary supplements that can make up for this shortfall. These supplements contain the synthetically produced form of folate, known as folic acid. This form of folate is stable and can be precisely dosed in supplements. However, there are important points to bear in mind here too, and there are significant differences in quality.
L-methylfolate vs. folic acid
Folic acid is the synthetically produced form of folate, whilst methylfolate (or L-methylfolate) is the methylated form of folic acid and is therefore the bioactive, highly bioavailable form. The Quatrefolic® L-methylfolate we use has a purity of at least 99.9% and is regarded as one of the highest-quality premium raw materials of its kind.
In everyday language, a distinction is often not made between these forms, even though they differ significantly.
Folic acid (also known as naturally occurring folate) is not biologically active and must therefore first be converted, in a multi-stage process, into the metabolically active L-methylfolate or 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF). A further prerequisite for this conversion is that the body is able to produce a specific enzyme which enables this conversion of folic acid to L-methylfolate. Studies show that a large proportion of the world’s population does not produce this enzyme (or does not produce enough of it), meaning that the folic acid they consume cannot be converted into the active L-methylfolate form in the first place.
L-methylfolate is the reduced or methylated form of folic acid, which can be optimally absorbed by the body. It is immediately active and is therefore immediately available to the body, as it no longer requires any prior conversion.
The effects of L-methylfolate
- Folate contributes to the normal functioning of the immune system and mental function.
- Folate contributes to normal mental function.
- Folate helps reduce tiredness and fatigue.
- Folate contributes to the growth of maternal tissue during pregnancy.
- Folate contributes to amino acid synthesis, homocysteine metabolism and blood formation.
- The consequences of a folate deficiency
A folate deficiency means that cell division and the growth process no longer function properly. This can lead to anaemia.
There is an increased need for folate, particularly during pregnancy, as an insufficient intake carries an increased risk of congenital malformations and damage to the child’s brain or spinal cord.
